Friday Focus

Holy Name of Mary, Friday, May 2, 2019

Happy Friday!

Hi everyone,

Can you believe it's already May? One of my old principals used to call the last two months of school "the waterslide to the end of the year". The next 8 weeks are going to be filled with activities, starting with Catholic Education Week, followed by Track & Field, EQAO, Victoria Day, First Reconciliation and First Communion, year-end trips, report cards and graduation.

Take a deep breath. It's going to be a wild ride down that waterslide, but we will all get there together. Have a great weekend and enjoy the beautiful weather!

Who do you know who deserves a Howl Out?

Thank you so much to those of you who have recognized students with Howl Outs over the past two weeks. We are off to a very good start, and I want to challenge each of you to give out two Howl Out cards next week. You can recommend anyone for a Howl Out, for any reason. The criteria is simple: Catch someone doing something good. That's all!

I can't tell you how much fun it is for me to call up a parent on speakerphone and surprise them with good news about their child while their child listens in! One of the parents I called this morning had me on the verge of tears as I listened to her tell her Grade 8 daughter how incredibly proud she was of the young woman she is becoming. I also called the parents of two little girls Cathy nominated for picking up garbage during recess today. The girls were so excited that they couldn't stop giggling and jiggling the whole time I was on the phone with their parents.

The response from parents has been overwhelmingly positive. They absolutely love getting great news from the school. So keep the cards coming. Just drop them off on my desk and I will call the student down to the office as soon as I have a chance. It really only takes 2 or 3 minutes to make each phone call, and it spreads a whole lot of joy!

On Monday morning I will make an announcement about the Howl Outs to let students know how it works. We will have a Howl Out bulletin board across from the Library filled with photos of students who have been nominated. Every Friday morning I will announce all the students who have received Howl Outs that week, and those students will get to go outside with me to play a game on Friday afternoon. Let the fun begin!
