Fourth Graders: Symphony Goes to School
Student and teacher response to the experience was overwhelmingly positive. Here are some comments from teachers about the experience:
- I really appreciated that the performance included a variety of arts. The students loved the ballet, singing, the young violinist, and the organist. Performing music from different composers and much that was familiar to them really added to their enjoyment. The many varied aspects really held their attention.
- This was an excellent experience that many of our students do not get to have with their families. Thank you for the exposure!
- It was wonderfully inspiring to see former students, and the excitement and engagement that our 4th graders exhibited going and returning from this event! Please continue to have this wonderful opportunity!
Recognition of orchestral instruments and different styles of music is part of the elementary music curriculum. Symphony Goes to School extends classroom lessons into another setting and provides a memorable learning experience.
Thank you to UI Arts Share and the UI School of Music for making this experience possible!
Kindergartners
KinderTales is an active learning experience that uses dramatic arts to help kindergartners express their thoughts and experiences in an articulate, confident manner. This year's KinderTales theme is pirates. During their trip to the museum, the students attend 'Pirate School' and work together in small groups to move through five activity stations that each involve a pirate task, such as walking the plank or digging for treasure. Pirate School culminates in circle time with the Pirate Captain leading the full group as they retell their pirate adventures, complete with sound effects and body movements.
Thanks to The Iowa Children's Museum for a fun, educational experience!
Visiting Author: Candace Fleming
Visiting author, Candace Fleming presented to third and fourth graders October 30 through November 3.
Speaking writer to writers, she encouraged students to be observant for the story ideas--or story seeds, as she calls them--that present themselves everyday.
Thanks to Hills Bank for supporting the Visiting Author program!
