Eagle Express
LHS Staff Newsletter--Year 19, Vol. 5, 09/16/19
Our Lunch
Our regular lunch schedule begins today. This schedule provides students with powerful opportunities including:
- tutoring opportunities
- reassessment/makeup opportunities
- more time to participate in clubs and activities
- the chance for participation in more offerings
- relationship building with peers and teachers
- building an even more positive culture in our school
As we begin our new lunch schedule, please review this link. The link contains the lunch duty matrix, valuable information on fulfilling duty responsibilities, what days and halves of lunch each department has office hours/tutoring and what clubs and activities are available for our students. This information will be available to students as they begin to plan what they will do during the week. Remember, the activities you have chosen to sponsor are open to all students. If the location you listed has changed, please notify Mrs. Singer so she can make the changes on the student information board. Also, please remember to put your duty location in your sub plans.
Academy Student Assembly
On Tuesday, September 17th, the academy has been given the unique opportunity to host several Navy Pilots. These guests will speak to all academy students in the auditorium during block 3A. Students will be called down at 10:55 a.m. and released from the assembly by 12:15 p.m. at which time they will get their lunch. In addition to the presentation, this assembly will allow all of the academy students to meet their new coordinator and hear about the logo challenge as well as other important information regarding the academy. Thank you in advance for your flexibility and support.
Advisory
Eagle Nation Advisory begins this week. Please check the link as some smaller classes have been combined or had a location change. The Lesson Framework for the year is linked here. This link will be the only link you will need for all lessons throughout the year. The framework will also be placed in the HLN All Staff Schoology group. On Wednesday, at the end of second block, an announcement will be made reminding all students to check their StudentVue for confirmation on their advisory teacher and location.
It is extremely important that attendance is taken in every Advisory. The new attendance report that is emailed each day provides a detailed view of your students and will include advisory on Wednesdays.
Please be sure to include your advisory location and plans in your sub plans. As we move into an updated Advisory format this year, you will notice that there are eagle exploration days where students will be given the opportunity to explore ideas they are interested in and also grade check-in days. Although a framework of plans has been provided for you, you may find a need to move some plans around to accommodate the sub in the event you are absent. There will not be advisory coverage provided this year. If situations arise that need special accommodations, please have your LL email Mrs. Singer or Mrs. Sanderlin.
Special Education Info
Accommodations for students with an IEP or 504
All IEP/504 accommodations for students have been distributed. Please be sure you have signed in the binder for each student you teach. If you are not on the student’s list, please add your name and sign. If you are missing accommodations for a student, please reach out to the case manager.
Testing with accommodations
If you do not have a co-teacher and need assistance with students’ accommodations, Amanda Cote in 209 is available to assist. Please complete this Google Form to let her know in advance how many students will be coming, which block, etc. Students will be required to sign in when they arrive. If you are a co-teacher for an inclusion class, you can use the 209 services if you need to/have both small group and read-aloud students. However, you can also take your students to an open classroom.
Lunch for Students with Disabilities
With few exceptions, students with disabilities are encouraged to participate in lunch with their non-disabled peers. If you know a student who you think may become overwhelmed, please let them know that Room 241 will be open for them.

Partners In Ed Info
Janet Balestino in our marketing department is our Community Engagement Liaison (CEL). She works with representatives from area businesses and community organizations to find mutually beneficial partnerships for LHS. Janet is the contact between LHS and the Office of Family and Community Engagement. Partnerships can include internship opportunities, tutoring, job shadowing, monetary donations, food and beverage donations, volunteers, mentoring students, and scholarships to name a few.
Please utilize the Community Mapping Exercise form found here to identify potential partners that you encounter. If you provide Janet with the name of the contact/owner, the business/organization and their phone number and email, she will reach out to them and send the interest form. If you have confirmed with contacts that they want to partner with us, please send them the Partners in Education (PIE) interest form to be filled out completely. You can return the completed forms to Janet via email (janet.balestino@VBschools.com) or place them in her mailbox.
Staff Pictures
Yearbook pictures for staff will take place in the auditorium Tuesday, September 17 and Wednesday, September 18 during all blocks. Staff members will not have to wait in line to take their picture. You simply fill out the card Lifetouch provides in the auditorium and go straight to one of the photographers. 9th, 10th, and 11th graders will have their pictures taken through Social Studies classes. Any students who do not have Social Studies will need to see Mr. Siock for an order form and pass.
Eagle Families
The yearbook is planning to feature our Eagle families in this year’s book! If a family member of yours attends school here or works here, please go together to take a picture with Lifetouch on Tuesday or Wednesday, September 17th or 18th. Your family photo will have a special spread in our yearbook!
Activities Fair
On Monday, September 23, we will host a club and activity fair during lunch. This is our effort to better publicize to students all the activities available at LHS as well as encourage them to be a part of the Eagle community. This is also a great way to spread the word about your organization, especially to students who are looking for a place to go during lunch. Please sign up for a table using this Google form by September 18. Don't forget to have someone at your table to answer student questions.
Pink Out Shirts
The Annual LHS Pink-Out shirt sale is live now and will close on September 24th. Shirts can be purchased online only at www.tinyurl.com/LHSPink19. This year we have long-sleeve, short-sleeve, and hoodie options. We've also added a black shirt with hot pink lettering. The pink-out football game is on October 18th. Staff who purchase a 2019 pink-out shirt OR wear pink and pay $5 can wear jeans to school on October 18th. All proceeds will go to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. If you are interested in the $5 jeans option, you can give your money to either Chelsea Brechtel or Kelly Singer.
Prudential Spirit of Community Award
The National Association of Secondary School Principals sponsors the Prudential Spirit of Community Award to honor students in grades 5-12 for making meaningful contributions to their communities through volunteer service. If you know a student who has an exceptional record of service, please encourage him/her to apply online at https://www.nassp.org/recognition/student-awards/prudential-spirit-of-community-awards/
Kudos
Kudos and thanks to our senior class for the fabulous class banner in the main stairwell. They managed to incorporate our vision statement, PBIS 3Bs, and the Heritage Week theme in their banner!
Kudos to Mark Dandridge in our counseling department for receiving a SOAR award. A parent was most appreciative of the way Mark went above and beyond in his efforts for her child.
Kudos to Andrea Everhart in Attendance. A parent wrote this week saying, "she is awesome…always positive and responsive!"
Congratulations to LHS for once again garnering the Sustainable School recognition. This effort is led by Kasi Daniel.
Congratulations to LHS grad LaRonde Liverpool who was recently featured in a Virginian Pilot article. LaRonde returned to Wake Forest this fall after a near fatal automobile accident. You can see the article here.
A teacher asked her students about the purpose of school. Here's one student's answer:
