MMW List Server Message
December 5, 2014
Hello Maureen M. Welch Parents,
I hope that you and your family are enjoying the beginning of the holiday season. As a common practice, the staff and I review our programs and procedures to constantly identify areas in which we can improve to provide a better and more enjoyable school experience for the children at MMW. Recently, we made revisions to our Positive Behavior Support Plan (C.A.R.E.S.). These changes were minor, but they reflect our desire to increase our recognition of children who are making good choices and worthy of receiving a C.A.R.E.S. coin.
The coins will be given to children when a staff member observes a student “exceeding and/or demonstrating personal growth with regard to C.A.R.E.S. expectations.” This may look a bit different in kindergarten and first grade where there is a greater need to teach expected behaviors. We believe that when a coin is given to a student, it is important that he/she understands what was done and what decision was made to earn the coin. This is the only way that the desired behavior will be reinforced and repeated. Reinforcement is enhanced when there is praise at home, as well. To meet these goals, staff members will now complete a C.A.R.E.S. Coin Card to give to the student after a coin is distributed. Moving forward, coins will no longer go home to then be returned to school. Instead, a C.A.R.E.S. Coin Card can be brought home to stay and be proudly displayed!
In addition, when a student receives a C.A.R.E.S. coin, he/she will fill out a slip of paper with their name and homeroom teacher. At the end of each month, five random names will be selected from students who earned coins in that time. These students will have their name announced, will be acknowledged in the school list server message, and will have “Pretzel Party” on a Friday morning with me.
Again, the purpose of these revisions is to make sure that the staff and I take time to acknowledge positive choices by the children instead of simply negative choices. We also feel that opportunities for praise at home from families will provide a positive experience for children and help reinforce desired behaviors.
On Monday, we conducted our monthly fire drill at MMW. However, it didn’t quite go as planned. When the alarm was activated, the sound was not very audible to all classrooms. This unfortunate situation actually turned into an opportunity. The staff and students alerted one another that there was a drill, and the students and staff exited the building in their normal safe and quick manner. Afterwards, I spoke with the children about the possibility that emergency situations may not go as we plan and rehearse despite our best efforts to practice. Making good and safe choices while following directions will be our best strategy. It showed on this day, and I was extremely proud of the students. Please know that we quickly identified the problem. The alarm system was modified last month and not correctly adjusted. But we had a team out to fix the alarm system and everything is once again functioning effectively.
