A Few Fun Ways to Teach Words

sight words, vocabulary and academic language

Why Words?

We all know that sight words, vocabulary and academic language are a huge part of what we teach our students. And sometimes this can be pretty mundane. These were some teaching strategies for sight words and vocabulary that I saw and really liked. I've only seen them done with kinders, but I think they can be adapted to any elementary grade level.

The Dolch Sight Word List

From preschool to grade 3, there are 330 words on the Dolch Sight Word List. 52 of those are for kindergartners. That's a lot of words for a five or six year old- so why not make it fun?

Three Ideas for Teaching Words

Like everything we've been learning, if we can make activities more engaging and hands on, our students are going to respond so much better!

Some Other Sight Word/Vocabulary Ideas

  • Sight Word Bingo
  • Sight Word Tic-Tac-Toe
  • Build a Sight Word with Legos (you write the letters on the side of the legos and the students have to build the words)
  • Sight Words Lists App- students get a chance to read and record words, as well as play games. It's leveled by grade.
