Here's What We Are Learning
Reading Workshop
This week during reading workshop we continued to answer questions using the QAR strategies. In preparation for the 3rd Grade Wax Museum, we read several different biographies and discussed the elements of a biography. In addition to this, we discussed the difference between famous and notable. We then began thinking about who we would like to be for the Wax Museum. Students turned in their papers of who they would like to be and why they are notable. If they haven't shared who they are going to be with you, please ask them for this. I sent home information regarding the wax museum on Monday. Hopefully, you all received it.
Writing Workshop
Wow! The students are doing an amazing job working on their documentaries. We are finishing these up this week and will have our Film Festival next week. Thank you all who have helped with interviewing! I'm so proud of these creative filmmakers.
Math Workshop
During our math workshop this week we focused on creating our bowls for our Empty Bowls project. Students worked on measuring and converting inches to feet as they worked on these. In addition to this, we reviewed area and perimeter. Wow! We were certainly surprised by some of our measurements!
Joe and Kaleb measuring the diameter of Joe's bowl.
Lexi and Claire taping strips together for the bowls.
Addie helping Blake with his bowl.
Empty Bowls
As we journey through our Empty Bowls project, we are focusing on three areas, Raising Awareness, Helping those in need, and finding the root causes. We have enjoyed listening to several speakers from the Town of Trustees Office and a representative from the Come to Me Food Pantry. We also watched A Place at the Table documentary. Students are gaining an understanding of this and have decided they would like to help. They would like to do a food drive and also put together their own documentary to help encourage others to donate to the food pantry and the importance of eating fruits and vegetables. Ask them what they have learned so far. What surprises them? We will be sending our bowls home this week and there will be several things the students will be sharing with you each night.
