SpEd Certification Extension Series

Sponsored by the Greater Rochester Teacher Center Network

NYS Teacher Centers are pleased to offer the Special Education Certification Extension Series once again! These are 15-week, online courses in which participants leave with the ability to apply for a certification extension (that would typically cost much more if taken at a college). We are offering a course for the SWD Pre-K- K extension and for the SWD 7-8 extension. Please note the eligibility requirements and cost in the links below. Designed for NYS special educators interested in extending their existing certification to address the growing shortage of certified special education teachers in NYS.

The Greater Rochester Teacher Center Network (GRTCN) has designed two online Continuing Teacher and Leader Education (CTLE) Certification Extension Course Series for special educators with a current Students with Disabilities Grades 1-6 certification: grades PreK-K and grades 7-8. The GRTCN worked with the NYSED Department of Higher Education and Department of Special Education to ensure all courses in each series satisfy the CTLE requirements for special education certification extension using targeted special education coursework.

Each 45 hour online CTLE course series certification includes three areas of learning (subsets): Knowledge of Students, Instructional Strategies and Professional Practice. Each subset is made up of 15 hours, composed of five 3-hour sessions of learning specific to the subset area. Upon successful completion of the 45 hours and with the teaching experience identified below, teachers can apply for the certification extension with NYSED. Participants will need to have access to a computer/device and internet.
