Special Education Certification Extension Series
New York State has approved certification pathways for Special Educators interested in extending their existing certification to grades Pre-K & K and Middle Grades 5,6,7,8. The requirements for these extensions include experience in one or both of the grade levels nearest the extension, a current NYS Students with Disabilities Generalist certification, and a 45 hour NYSED-approved course in the extension grade band. These courses meet the NYSED criteria for extending an existing NYS Students with Disabilities Generalist certification, and are available to you at NO COST. Register today to reserve your spot!
Early Childhood (PreK-K) Special Education Certification Extension Series
Participants will complete 45 hours of coursework that extends Certification for PreK-K Special Education. Knowledge of Students, Instructional Strategies and Professional Practice standards will be taught through the NYS Teaching Standards. Typical development, RTI in early childhood, creating accessible learning environments and CPSE IEP development will be included. This entire course will be conducted online.
There are two classes to choose from:
Fall Class:
This series provides the requisite minimum of 45 hours of acceptable CTLE focused on early childhood education. Eligible teachers must have a SWD 1-6 NYS Certification & a minimum of 3 years teaching experience at 1st and/or 2nd grade levels.
Format: Synchronous Online
Dates: 10/9 - 12/18 (Saturdays)
Time: 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

Winter Class:
Dates of synchronous online 3-hour components: Knowledge of Students: January 12, 19, 26, Feb. 2, 9, Instructional Strategies: Feb.16, March 2, 9, 16, 23; Professional Practice:
March 30, April 6, 20, 27 and May 4, 2022
Time: 4 - 7 PM
Participants will need to have access to a computer/device and internet.
Please note: Eligible teachers must have a Student with Disabilities 1-6 NYS Certification and a minimum of 3 years teaching experience at 1st and/or 2nd grade levels.

Grade 5-6 & 7-8 Special Education CTLE Certification Extension Series
Participants will complete 45 hours of coursework that qualifies to extend Certification to SWD Grades 5-6 and 7-8. There will be three sections: Knowledge of Students, Instructional Strategies and Professional Practice. Each section will be one day/week (3 hours) for 5 weeks. Content is aligned to the NYS Teaching and CEC Standards. This entire course will be conducted online via Zoom (live discussions) and an online work platform. Attendance Policy: Attendance and completion of work is mandatory for receiving 45 hours of CTLE credit toward certification extension.
Fall Class:
This series provides the requisite minimum of 45 hours of acceptable CTLE focused on middle level education. Eligible teachers must have a SWD 1-6 NYS Certification & a minimum of 3 years teaching experience at 5th and/or 6th grade levels for the 7-8 Extension or current 7-12 SWD Generalist or Content Specialist certification and 3 years experience in grades 7 and/or 8 for the 5-6 Extension.

SPECIAL EDUCATION (SE) CERTIFICATION EXTENSION COURSE 10-12
This series provides the requisite minimum of 45 hours of acceptable CTLE focused on middle level education. Eligible teachers must have a SWD 5-9 NYS Certification and a minimum of 3 years teaching experience at 8th and/or 9th grade levels.
