READING INSTRUCTION
In Shawnee Mission, we are committed to strengthening literacy outcomes for our students through evidence-based instruction and understanding how the brain learns to read. As a district, we took the first step in January by providing six hour professional learning modules about the characteristics of dyslexia. Additionally, we have identified eight LETRS (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling) facilitators to provide ongoing training and support to Shawnee Mission educators. While these are great first steps, we know there is more professional learning needed to impact teaching and student learning. Therefore, we'd like to provide LETRS training for up to eight additional teachers serving pre-K -3rd grade students. Our long-term plan includes creating classrooms with LETRS trained professionals to implement strong foundational skills instruction and for which to lead and model evidence-based instruction for other Shawnee Mission educators.
An invitation to apply for this training will be sent to PK-3rd grade teachers and the submission deadline will be May 19. More details will be included in the email invitation to be sent by end of day Friday. If you have a teacher leader looking to develop his/her skill set in evidence-based reading instruction, please encourage him/her to apply for this opportunity.
The application can be found at this link. The submission deadline is May 19, 2021.

K-6 SOCIAL STUDIES
Great news!
The SMSD Board of Education approved the purchase of McGraw Hill’s Impact (K-5) and Networks (6th) as the elementary Social Studies resource. The pilot team spent many months examining and using different Social Studies resources in their instruction with their students this past year. McGraw Hill received the highest rating in the evaluation as the team felt it was the best fit and met the criteria that was determined necessary to support teaching and student learning. Thank you to the pilot team for the time and energy spent in this work!
More details will come about the professional learning for this resource that will be available to all K-6 teachers.

CDC guidelines update
Thursday, the Centers for Disease Control released Interim Public Health Recommendations for Fully Vaccinated People. This guidance states that “fully vaccinated people no longer need to wear a mask or physically distance in any setting, except where required by federal, state, local, tribal, or territorial laws, rules, and regulations, including local business and workplace guidance.”
However, contained within that guidance is an important caveat: CDC’s school guidance has remained unchanged. In response to a question about masks in schools, the CDC states: “As of now, the CDC’s school guidance remains unchanged. Most students will still be unvaccinated and schools should follow CDC’s guidance for schools.”
