Announcements
- Thank you to all of the parents who placed orders for our Scholastic book order. Because of you, our class received 13 free books! I have never had a class with so much participation, which means I have never added so many books to our class library! Thank you!
- Please see my eBoard for any past newsletters!
Fun Facts
- We will be participating in The Hour of Code, which takes place next week during Computer Science Education Week. Our buddy class will help us navigate the computer so we can learn the basics of coding! Check out our homeroom app next week for pictures!
Curriculum
Fundations
We have completed Unit 3 of Fundations, and we will be completing Unit 4 this week. Students learned the digraphs wh, th, ch, sh, and ck. The difference between ch and ck can be tricky for students. In Unit 4, we learned about the bonus letters f, l, s, and sometimes z that can appear at the end of the word. We also learned about the glued sound all. Students are becoming much more confident in spelling on their own!
Reader's Workshop
First graders have been becoming stronger readers by sequencing events in a story and identifying special text features in nonfiction books. These special features could be items such as a table of contents, headings, bold words, labels, or graphs! We have also been working on reading fluently. We practice reading smoothly by scooping phrases in word study. Students work on fluency when they reread books several times, as this helps them to remember words that they had to slow down to sound out the time before. We also work on our expression while reading. We think about how the character would talk, and we look at the punctuation for clues.
Math Workshop
Students are well into Unit 3 in math. In this unit, we continue to use addition and subtraction to model and solve number stories. Students have become skilled in solving problems with missing addends! They have learned many strategies to solve addition and subtraction problems. We have focused on parts and totals diagrams, using pictures to help solve problems, and counting on the number line. I am impressed with how well these mathematicians concentrate and focus to solve problems.
Writer's Workshop
Writers are continuing to work on small moment stories from their own lives. We are now in the editing phase. The writers use a checklist to make sure they have spaces and punctuation. They also meet with their writing partners to make sure their writing is easy to read! Soon, we will have a publishing party. I will put their stories in our classroom library.
Social Studies and Science
First graders got to go on a virtual field trip to Plymouth Plantation! We climbed aboard the Mayflower to learn more about how the Pilgrims traveled. We also explored a Wampanoag home site and the Pilgrims' first homes. In the science lab, we are completing our unit on comparing and measuring. After exploring many different ways to measure, students discovered that it is more beneficial to use standard units of measure.
