The American Consortium for Small Ruminant Parasite Control recently welcomed five new members. Dr. Jessica Quijada is a visiting professor at the American Institute for Goat Research at Langston University. Dr. Leyla Rios is an Extension Sheep & Goat Specialist at Mississippi State University. Dr. Leonor Sicalo is a veterinarian and Ph.D. student working under Dr. Ray Kaplan at the University of Georgia. Dr. Ashley Steuer is on the faculty of the new vet school at Texas Tech University. Dr. Roger Ramirez-Barrios is a faculty member in the VA-MD Regional College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech.
The consortium was founded in 2003 in response to the critical state of the small ruminant industry associated with the emergence of anthelmintic resistant worms. Membership includes scientists, veterinarians, extension specialists, and others who meet regularly and are in close communication, continuously updating guidelines for parasite management.
Lambing when parasites are less active is often suggested as a means of controlling parasites. USDA researchers in Arkansas compared parasitism in Katahdin lambs born in the winter (Jan-Feb) vs. those born in the fall (Oct-Nov).
Less is known about gastro-intestinal parasitism in the western US. A study was undertaken to provide baseline data on gastro-intestinal parasite prevalence, species composition, and anthelmintic resistance on sheep farms that use irrigated or sub-irritated pastures in the Intermountain West. Producers were also surveyed regarding their management strategies and production parameters.

There are fourteen fact sheets in the Best Management Practices to Control Internal Parasites Fact Sheet Series. Each fact sheet was written and reviewed by members of the American Consortium for Small Ruminant Parasite Control. The series was created to provide information to help sheep, goat, and camelid producers manage gastro-intestinal parasitism in their flocks/herds.
Since 2013, over 60 "Timely Topic" articles have been published to the web site of the American Consortium for Small Ruminant Parasite Control (ACSRPC; WormX). The articles are written by members of the consortium and cover various topics pertaining to internal parasite control in sheep, goats, and camelids. Some of the articles are available in PDF format.
