RMS Castle Crew Color Run
We are excited to launch our First Castle Crew Color Run on Thursday, September 21st. The Color Run is similar to the walk-a-thon format that many of our students participated in during elementary. We are hoping this will be a successful fundraiser that will generate funds for our Positive Behavior Intervention Supports, general student recognition opportunities, and offsetting the costs to enrichment activities like field trips.
Your Knight learned about the Castle Crew Color Run during our first week of school. Below you will find additional information on how you can support our Color Run efforts. Our Knights are working towards individual, classroom, and school wide incentives and rewards.
It is important that your child registers their account and shares the link to family and friends.
Thank you in advance for your support in starting our 23-24 school year!
We have raised 8,270.00 surpassing our building goal of $5,000. Thank you to the families who have contributed already.
SECOND STEP PARTICIPATION DURING SEMINAR STARTING THIS WEEK FOR OUR KNIGHTS!
Starting this week of September 18th, we will begin Second Step Middle School participation at RMS, a research-based social-emotional learning program designed to improve students’ social-emotional skills, such as emotion management, impulse control, problem solving, and empathy. Second Step skills and concepts are designed to help students both in and out of school.
These include:
*Mindsets and Goals: Students learn how to develop a growth mindset and apply research based goal-setting strategies to their social and academic lives.
*Recognizing Bullying and Harassment: Students learn how to recognize bullying and harassment, stand up safely to bullying, and respond appropriately to harassment.
*Thoughts, Emotions, and Decisions: Students learn how to recognize strong emotions and unhelpful thoughts, and apply strategies to manage their emotions and reduce stress.
* Managing Relationships and Social Conflict: Students learn strategies for developing and maintaining healthy relationships, perspective-taking, and dealing with conflict.
As we present lesson bi-weekly, we will be sharing applicable resources that can support continued conversation with our families and their Knights. Be on the lookout for those communications in our weekly smores.
Lesson 1 for 7th Grade Second Step Lesson: Creating New Pathways in Your Brain
Summary-In this lesson, our 7th Grade knights will learn that intelligence is not fixed; their brain actually makes new connections and their skills and abilities develop when they practice difficult things.
At home question- Tell your Knight about a time you had to learn something challenging and explain how you persisted in learning it. Ask your Knight if there’s anything they would like to learn to do during 1st semester.
Week 1 for 8th Grade Second Step Lesson- Who am I? My Identity
Summary- In this lesson, your 8th grade Knight will learn that their identity is complex. They will learn how to create an identity map that names unique and important aspects of their identity.
At Home Question- Share your response to the following questions with your 8th Grade Knight. Then have your Knight and any additional family members share their responses.
- Who am I?
- What are the most important aspects of my identity and why?
Health Guidance for Going to School
We want to partner with our families to make our school a safe, healthy and welcoming environment for our students.
Make sure to send your child to school if they are generally healthy and able to participate in their usual day-to-day activities. Avoid keeping children at home unless they are too sick to participate.
Our district has put together this helpful chart below of when to keep your child home and when they can return to school for common illnesses.
Check the "Student Success Resource" Below for more useful info.

The power of collaboration in Science 7
Each team constructed a tower where the bucket was three inches off the ground and suspended by the string. The teams than placed pennies in the bucket- one by one until it
collapses or the bucket goes below 3 inches. The team that held the most pennies was the winner. Each team had seven minutes to build and practice; than redesign their tower before competition. After the lab, the class was introduced to their six competencies and how each was used throughout their science process today and in every day science application.
2023-24 Meals Information
Families are still asked to complete the Education Benefits Form, as this information is used for district funding.
Breakfast and Lunch are FREE for all students for the 2023-2024 school year.
We encourage everyone to participate. You are still welcome to send your child with a lunch from home if you would prefer.
Honor the Castle by respecting others, modeling responsibility, and making safe choices.
Outside Food and Beverage Policy
Outside food delivery is a safety concern. We do not want to have strangers and people that we do not know coming to our buildings with delivery bags. It also is a workload issue for office personnel. Managing multiple food deliveries during lunchtime becomes an additional responsibility for our office staff.
The District works hard to provide a variety of healthy, good-tasting food in its cafeterias, and students are always free to bring their own lunch to school. We will continue to follow our past practice of making sure students receive lunch if they forget to bring one from home.

To provide the most effective process for entering and exiting Richards Middle School, we need our families consistent help in observing the below traffic expectations:
- Our RMS bus loop is only to be used by emergency vehicles and our district’s school buses between the hours of 7:15 am through 4:00 pm.
- To help with our daily traffic flow, please follow our painted traffic arrows in our parking lot.
- In supporting our traffic flow for entering and exiting for all vehicles, please observe no standing, parking, waiting and stopping in the parking lot aisle ways.
- When exiting Richards Middle School at dismissal time, please utilize either our RMS Garfield exit, FHS Garfield exit or FHS Klein exit.
Please be aware of students, families and guests who are walking in our parking lots by obeying traffic laws, regulating your speed, and following the traffic direction arrows. Images can be found below. Please no parking or standing where you see a red x.
Our district security personnel will communicate these expectations to our families when needed. Thank you for your support with keeping RMS a safe travel area for everyone on campus.
PLEASE BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR ADDITIONAL SIGNS ALONG THE DROP OFF LANE TO HELP DIRECT TRAFFIC FLOW!
Attention students who utilize the crosswalk to walk over Garfield Road
This is a reminder to our students to ensure that you are using the appropriate area to cross the street to get to the other side of Garfield. Please see pictures below for reference of our crosswalk signs and striped area by the Richards Middle School Electronic Board. We want our students to make sure they are looking both ways and being aware of vehicles traveling on Garfield. Always wait to cross this crosswalk when the road is clear to do so.
We thank you for always being aware of your safety and traveling vehicles as you arrive and leave RMS at this crosswalk area.
