HES List Server Message
August 25, 2017
Hello Holland Elementary Parents,
This week, the HES maintenance and cleaning staff continued to work on preparing the school for students. There were also teachers in school each day preparing their classrooms and halls to welcome the children.
At my home, there seems to be a flurry of activity, as well. In addition to wanting to complete summer Bucket List items (some fun tasks and some not-so-fun tasks), we're busy getting ready for the start of school. I have a child in all three levels: high school, middle school, and elementary school. The preparation to get ready for school's return is different for each child, but I know that all three of them are feeling both excited and nervous about the first day.
I tell my kids that each year that I have a tough time falling asleep on the night before the first day of school. Although my "first day" outfit is picked out and I know my routine for the first day, my mind keeps racing that night about all that could happen the first day of school. Change is hard, but change can be good. Actually, it can be really good!
The start of school sometimes means new clothes, new sneakers, a new backpack or new lunchbox. (And it brings the start of the football season!) But it also means new teachers and new friends, and an opportunity to grow, have fun, and do things that they may have never done before.
Be sure to take time with your child over the next week to remind him or her of the familiar faces and friends that will be at school on the first day. Also, talk about their favorite school activities, the best memory from summer, and their Hopes and Dreams for the new school year. The upcoming school year should be viewed as an opportunity for the children. And, they're so fortunate to be going to a school with classmates and teachers who take care of one another so well. If your child is still feeling a little anxious, feel free to email me and I could surprise him or her with a phone call to get pumped up for the new year!
Parent-Student Handbook
Although there are some items in the new handbook that are specific to Holland Elementary School and remained unchanged (dismissal procedures and Positive Behavior Support Plan), there are a few pieces of information that are somewhat new or revised. So, I encourage parents to review the new handbook with their child(ren). This is also an optimal way to have students get back into "school mode."
You can view the revised handbook at the following LINK.
Kindergarten Orientation and Open House
The Kindergarten Orientation will be next Thursday, August 31st at 12:00 for students in the AM program, and it will be at 1:30 for the children in the PM program. Sorry for any confusion from the prior information that was sent home.
In addition, our Open House will also be next Thursday, August 31st from 2:30-3:30. This is a great opportunity for your child to meet his/her teacher and see the new classroom. In prior years, this activity was staggered throughout the day with different grades at different times. To avoid having parents coming to the school multiple times that day, the staff and I felt that it would be easiest to bring everyone together at one time. Parking will be extended to the back lot and recess areas, and a staff member will be outside to direct traffic and assist with parking. Due to the parking in the recess area, children will not be permitted to play in the recess yard during this activity.
Also, the staff and I ask that families visit only with their current teacher. The teachers want to make themselves available as much as possible to speak with new students and parents. I’m sure that the teachers would love to catch up with former students and parents, but this is a time for meeting with current teachers only. Thanks for your help!
Bus Information
Last week, bus information was released to families. However, parents are encouraged to double check pick-up and drop-off times during the Labor Day Weekend, as changes may occur with pick-up and/or drop-off times.

2017-18 Attendance Letter - Immunization Requirement Changes
See the LINK for the district’s Attendance Letter. Please note that there are some significant changes to attendance laws.
Be sure to review this LINK to learn about these revised laws. In short, a parent must have all immunizations completed for their child within the first five days of school. The previous eight-month period that parents were given is no longer in effect. Students without all immunizations completed within the first five days of school will not be permitted in school. ·

Healthy Snacks Letter
As a district, we must promote healthy eating habits, as good nutrition and exercise are critical to the wellness of students. For these reasons, and to accommodate the increasing number of students’ medical and food allergy needs, we are promoting healthy food choices during our elementary classroom parties. You can read more information about these guidelines at the following LINK.
