Welcome back and Happy New Year! It is wonderful to see everyone back on campus-happy, healthy, and embracing the snow! Throughout my 20+ years in education, the start of the New Year has always been exciting as students seem to hit the ground running in their academic gains and yearning for knowledge. It’s the time when students’ eyes light up with pride from how much they know and understand. Students’ are walking around with a great book in hand and struggle to put it down. The adventures found between the pages take them on journeys they never imagined. I LOVE IT! We had our Accelerated Reader (AR) kickoff event at the Elementary school on January 5th, and I have already begun congratulating students as they reach their reading goals. Way to go Little Jays! We are incredibly blessed in Mancos to be able to partner with our Public Library in the capacity we do. Remember students and families are able to access AR at the Library after school and on Saturday. I encourage you to read books together and head out on adventures as a family.
Mark your calendars for January 21 from 5:00-7:00 for our Educational Fair and Open House PK-12! A baked potato bar is available in the cafeteria starting at 5pm for $5.00. Join us at 5pm and have dinner with our staff! We will have a spectacular show in the cafeteria of Science Fair projects, and the classrooms will be open from 5:30-7:00 for families to visit with teachers and see the exciting things taking place. The Pre-School is hosting engaging math activities in classrooms from 5:30-7:00, and Elementary classes will be showcasing students’ work. (4th and 5th grade will be in the cafeteria throughout the evening.) We look forward to seeing you!

Report Cards: We completed the second quarter and report cards were sent home last week. Please review, sign, and send back all the report cards when you are finished going over them.
AR KICKOFF! Last week, the Elementary Staff hosted an exciting Accelerated Reader-AR Kickoff event to reignite students’ passion for reading! All students have been given the guidelines and incentives tied to AR. Students are already reading like crazy and gathering points as they work toward their 3rd quarter reading goals! Please make sure you have signed the AR acknowledgement form and return it by January 15. Students are working hard to earn their “Golden Ticket” for the Mystery Field Trip in May! We hope to fill our busses with students K-5 that reach their goals for 3rd and 4th quarters! Have fun with your child as you go on numerous adventures in books as a family!
Update Personal Information – Last week, a purple form was sent home with family’s personal information. This is information we received during registration time and currently have on file in our Powerschool database. Please review, update, and send the form back by Friday, 1/15/16 if there are any changes to be made. This will ensure we have all current information on file.
Label Clothing – Parents, please label your child’s clothing-especially snow pants and jackets- so they may be returned if found.

Mancos Ski Club in Telluride - All dates are on Sundays: February 7, 21, & 28, 2016 If you signed up in October, a notice outlining logistics will be sent home on Monday, January 18.
Little Caesar Pizza Fundraiser – Order forms have been sent home, so look for them in your child’s folder. Due date to turn money and orders in by is Friday, 1/22. You can also order online and pay with your debit/credit card. All orders can either be shipped to the school free on the day of delivery or directly to that person subject to a fee. To order online go to www.pizzakit.com. Enter Fundraiser ID # 309290 for the Mancos School District Pizza Kit Fundraiser. Under the tab ‘products’ click on ‘shop’ and choose ‘ship my order to the group’. Add ‘Sellers Name’ on the ‘Check Out’ Page.

Several Ways to Raise $ for the School without doing much:
Earn $ for our School– Do you want a way to support the schools without much effort and for something you may already do? Mancos PTA has signed up for a great and super easy fundraiser called www.fortheschools.com. All you have to do is go to the website, sign up, choose your school/organization- Mancos PTA, and then get shopping! Fortheschools.com is connected with over 1,400 stores nationwide including Amazon, Target, and Walmart. Each purchase you make through fortheschools.com earns the PTA cashback that we can then give to the schools for needed programs! So let's get shopping!
Recycle - Calling all cell phones…no pun intended. The school gets money for old cell phones, inkjet and laser jet printer cartridges, iPods, and iPads. Please send these with your child to school.
Coke Rewards - For all you Coca-Cola drinkers, save the caps or the box flaps from the packs to donate points to our school. Drop those off at the school or register online www.mycokerewards.com and donate your points to Mancos Elementary.
Box Tops - Keep collecting box tops and sending them to school to give to classroom teachers. Teachers have a competition amongst each other to see who collects the most each month. PTA awards the classroom with a treat for the most collected. Our goal this year is 15,000, which is $1,500 that goes back to the school. Congratulations to 2nd Grade class for winning 2nd quarter with 367 collected. We’ve already collected over 5200 for the year. We have a lot more to go. Keep them coming!
Peewee Girls T-ball (4-6 years) and Softball (7-16 years)– Calling all girls! If you are interested in playing T-ball or softball, please stop by any school office (PK-12) to pick-up a form. There needs to be a minimum of 9 girls to make a team. The cost is $25 if you register before 3/31 and $35 after. Montezuma Cortez High School Dance Team Hosts Mini Dance Camp (4 Years and Up)
Learn a fun dance routine! Get a camp t-shirt and perform at a Panther Basketball Game with the Panther Dancers on Saturday, 1/23, @ Halftime (Game starts at 11:30am). Practices will be January 19, 20, 21, 22 from 5:15 – 6:15pm at Cortez High School. The cost is $30 for the first child and $20 for each additional child in the same household.
