February 3, 2017
It is from the bottom of my heart that I thank our blood donors for giving on Wednesday! As I was giving, I was told that one pint of blood can save the life of three people. When it is said like this you recognize the impact of your giving. I also know that way too often a person needs multiple units of blood. Midway's blood drive collected 47 pints! Our goal was 50 but several people were not able to give. We do thank these people as their heart was in it!!
Please know that our American Red Cross Blood Drive began in 2012 after a true crisis involving a Midway family. We have faithfully been committed to this as we realized how many of our children also have needed and will need blood. It is a heartfelt thank you to our secretary, Mrs. Alicia Weed, for her personal commitment in leading this community service!
Zaxby's Day was certainly a timely event! Midway employees sent out to have lunch picked up for building the energy in giving blood. Thank you to all who attended as restaurant days and nights give money back to our MES PTO in supporting our students. Thank you, PTO, for sponsoring these events!!!
Book Fair and Box Tops for Education are this week!! Book Fair is fun and book selections are GREAT! Box Tops for Education gets MES free money as you have already bought the product. You send in the labels and box tops so PTO is able to collect the money. This is called a win-win!!
Have a great weekend and start selecting the titles of books you and your child would like to purchase!

French Immersion Crêpe Day
About la Chandeleur
Also called Crêpe Day, la Chandeleur is a French holiday during which people traditionally eat crêpes.
While some say Chandeleur celebrates the return of sunny days (crêpes symbolize the sun), others say that making crêpes using flour left over from the harvest ensures prosperity in the coming year.
And, of course, there is the traditional coin ritual: if you can flip a crêpe while holding a coin in your other hand, you and your family will not have to worry about financial problems.
Similar to English proverbs about Groundhog Day, there are many French proverbs and sayings about la Chandeleur; here are just a few:
À la Chandeleur, l'hiver cesse ou reprend vigueur
On Candlemas, winter ends or strengthens
À la Chandeleur, le jour croît de deux heures
On Candlemas, the day grows by two hours
Chandeleur couverte, quarante jours de perte
Candlemas covered (in snow), forty days lost
Rosée à la Chandeleur, hiver à sa dernière heure
Dew on Candlemas, winter at its final hour
