On the School Calendar
Every day! School doors open at 7:45 for breakfast, classes start promptly at 8:15!
It’s Reading Olympics Time! The sign-up sheets are posted in the hallways. If you have questions see Ms. Grieco. Teams will be formed after January 17th, as well as an after-school meeting time. Join now!
SLA-MS Title I Audit: Schools are audited on a regular basis. Five families are needed to volunteer to give input to the audit team. Please contact Mr.Boyle (tmboyle@philasd.org) if you are interested in "Title I Volunteer" in the Email title.
Planning ahead! Mini-Course Facilitators are needed for the Spring Session starting March 6th. Do you have an interest or hobby you want to share with our students? Art, debate, book series, design, building, engineering, sports, the list goes on! We are looking for parents and community members to share their interests with our students for our next mini-course session. Please contact Ms.Sheena (shneal@philasd.org) ASAP for further details!
Career Days Call! We are looking for community members to share their career with 7th graders for a series of Career Days to happen in late March through April. If interested please contact Ms.Potts: dpotts@philasd.org. Thank you!
On Friday, January 18th, 2019 all items in the lost and found will be donated to our local shelter.

- SLA-MS Girl's Basketball Team plays Shipley MS at Shipley Middle School (814 Yarrow St, Byrn Mawr, PA), start time 3.30pm
Friday, 1.25.19:
- SLA-MS Girls and Boys Basketball Team plays against Penrose at Penn Alexander (4209 Spruce St) Girls start at 3.30pm & Boys start at 4.30pm
- SLA-MS Girls and Boys Basketball Team plays against OEC at 6722 Lansdowne Ave. Girls start at 3.30pm & Boys start at 4.30pm
NO School on the following days:
- The school will be CLOSED on Friday, January, 18th to Students for Staff Professional Development Day.
- The school will be CLOSED on Monday, January, 21st to Students and Staff for Dr. Martin Luther King Day
No HSA Meeting this month.
Breakfast with Boyle will be happening Thursday, January 24th, 2019 at 9.00am. Location TBD
Report Card Conferences / Early Dismissal Days: Parent Teacher Conferences will be held on Wednesday, January 30th, Thursday, January 31st, and Friday, February 1st from 12:30 - 3:20 pm. All three days are 12:20 early dismissals for students. Pathfinder, Voyager and Opportunity Teachers will be contacting families about scheduling a conference. If you do not hear from your student's teachers by January 21st and would like to schedule a conference, please contact the team (not your advisor).
Home and School Board Elections are in January. If you are interested in running for Home & School Board President, Secretary or Treasurer please complete this interest form.
Weekly Repeats
Mondays: Run Club. Meet after school in the class-a-gym-a-torium. Students go on a brief run with a supervising teacher.
Tuesdays:
- Lit Lab: Join us on Tuesdays from 3:30 - 4:30 in Ms. Grieco's room for snacks, shared reading, writing games and other Humanities-related activities! Have ideas of things you want to do during this time? Talk with or email Ms. Hilary or Ms. Grieco!
- Chess Club:Tuesday at 3.20pm-4.45pm in the class-a-gym-a-torium. With Home & School. All students are welcomed.
Thursdays: Math Lab in Ms.I's room! Math lab is a space for students who want extra time for students to develop math skills through extension activities. You can also get support on current math work. We are open to 5th, 6th and 7th graders!
Every Thursday: $1 Pretzel Sale. Soft pretzels will be for sale in the morning & at lunchtime, while supplies last!
School Announcements
Reminder: It is school policy that students only use their phones for learning purposes.
Inside recess days are coming! Donations of tabletop games, LEGOs and card games like Uno are appreciated!
Lose your Student ID? You can get a new one from Ms.Hull for $5 during your lunch.
Shelled seeds are not a snack for school. Please keep them at home or enjoy them outside of school.
Dress for warmth! Winter is here! Please make sure your SLA-MS student is dressed to be warm and comfortable.
Keep slime at home: Slime, putty and other gooey substances are not allowed at SLA-MS. It can ruin Chrome Books, other personal belongings and clog sinks. Please keep it at home.
Reminder: students need to be seen by the nurse prior to early dismissal for illness. Students must see the nurse first before being picked up for illness.
Wear Layers! We've noticed some students are chilly in classrooms. Having a light sweater or hoodie will keep your student comfortable and focused on learning.

From the Nurse's Office
This is a reminder that it is school protocol for students to be seen by the nurse prior to early dismissal for illness. Students must see the nurse first before being picked up for an illness.
The flu/cold season has begun. To limit the spread of illness, please use the following guideline when determining whether or not to send your child to school. Thank you for keeping our school healthy!
