Terra Linda Tiger Tale
August 17, 2020
Principal's Message
Dear Terra Linda Families,
I hope you are doing well. As we prepare for Comprehensive Distance Learning through at least November 16th, I am reaching out to inquire about specific family needs.
We realize many families may have many similar challenges, but some challenges may be family-specific.
We would appreciate your input on the survey linked below as we prepare for the start of school. Please read through the following information first:
Background Information:
All students will be assigned to a classroom teacher for the 2020-2021 school year.
Students will also be assigned to an attendance day group (either Monday/Tuesday or Thursday/Friday) in preparation for if and when we enter a time of hybrid instruction. Attendance groups will be assigned to ensure household members/siblings are on the same attendance day schedule across all levels, K-12.
Students have been assigned to initial attendance groups, but we are making adjustments to make sure we have balanced classroom communities and balanced class sizes across each grade level. While we can adjust some attendance group assignments, many assignments cannot be changed due to the impact across our K-12 system.
Even if school opens back up for the hybrid model of learning, families can still choose to stay home and engage in full-time Comprehensive Distance Learning through the end of the school year.
Below are some factors for you to consider in preparing your survey responses:
If your family is partnering with one or more families by creating their own “learning pods” for distance learning.
If your work schedule or childcare situation necessitates a particular attendance group.
If there are friendships and/or beneficial learning partners that could support social/emotional needs.
We've also included some questions about other needs your family might have, such as internet access, technology needs, and general family support. You'll also notice a place to indicate that you would be willing to partner with another family for tech support.
Please fill out the survey linked below to aid in our planning for the start of the new school year. You will need to set aside 8-10 minutes to answer all of the questions. Although we cannot accommodate or guarantee all requests, we will work with you to support your family’s distance learning needs and alleviate burdens when we can. Please submit your input by August 26th at 4:00pm.

We have posted School Supplies for At-Home Learning. We built our lists off of the items in the Student Success Kit list that you received on email last week. A few items aren't needed at certain grade levels, and we added a few items to most lists.
We plan to purchase a white board and marker for each student. We will announce a pick-up time prior to the start of school.
If you are unable to purchase any or all of the above supplies, please contact the Terra Linda office at 503-356-2490 and we will assist you.

Sam Day 37-Mile Challenge
The Story (from the SamDayFoundation.org website):
The brutality of cancer treatment is something a kid should never have to experience. But in September of 2010, nine-year-old Sam Day was diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma, a rare and relentless bone cancer. (At the time, Sam was a 3rd grader at Terra Linda.)
His treatment was so intense it required inpatient chemotherapy for days at a time, daily shots and an amputation of his left leg below the knee.
At diagnosis, he was said to have a 75% chance of surviving five years or more. But after one year of remission, Sam relapsed and his prognosis became extremely poor.
For six years Sam endured multiple treatment regimens, clinical trials, 20 surgeries, and one off-label drug (not FDA approved for pediatric cancers). His family sought treatment from the best oncologists in the country, and became committed to strict nutritional and naturopathic therapies.
During his six-year battle, Sam’s family and friends began to raise funds for the development of a targeted drug for Ewing Sarcoma in the hopes that Sam would live long enough to receive that new and promising treatment.
Sam died on August 27th, 2016 at age 15, never having the opportunity to receive that breakthrough drug.
