Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day
November 14th
What is Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day?
“Why isn’t there a day named after Ruby Bridges?” – Maddie P
This initiative started with a question from a group of AAA School Safety Patrollers from Martin Elementary in South San Francisco. Nearly 60 years later, as they were hearing Ruby’s story for the first time, and learning about her courage and bravery, they thought there should be a day to commemorate the movement she started. These students took their idea to the State Legislature and today the Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day will be recognized by the state of California on November 14 each year. Like Ruby, they lead the way and set an example for all of us to follow.
Today, Schools like Martin Elementary and Ruby Bridges Elementary in Alameda, California and Ruby Bridges Elementary in Woodinville, Washington continue to honor Ruby’s legacy in their own way. The latest initiative being The Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day. An annual day of dialogue to commemorate her historic steps. These students will continue the conversation and take part in their own forms of activism to bring an end to racism and all forms of bullying.

Ruby Bridges Foundation Information
- Pledge - A nice way to start the day after providing students with some background knowledge.
- Discussion Questions - Perfect for unpacking the videos and readings you may do.
- Action (Spanish and English) - This, along with the discussion questions, is the true meaning behind the day. What can students do to enact positive change?
What can Lowrie do?
No. Many school communities will come together once everyone has arrived. This day is focused on the dialogue within the community and the projects that will follow. Not all kids are able to walk to school safely, and safety is always the priority. Historically Ruby's walk was up the stairs and into the building, and THAT was what made history.
Here at Lowrie, each class will symbolically walk around the building and into the front doors.
What does a day of dialogue mean?
The day of dialogue will take place during the school day. Start with the videos and discussion questions, but feel free to add your own.
It's an opportunity to support our students in reflecting upon what is important to them. They can decide together on what project to undertake in an effort to address an issue that the kids feel is most important. Even small projects/movements can make a lasting difference.
Wear Purple
Show unity in working together toward a brighter world, Together Once Step at a Time. Ribbons will be provided as an option to students and staff needing something purple.
