Warrior News
A Weekly Newsletter for Warrior Families and Students
April 12, 2019
Dear Warrior Students & Families,
Today brought a powerful reminder of the importance of community and the impact of social media. In case you have not had the chance to view it, here is the message that was shared earlier today via Infinite Campus:
This morning MHS Administration was made aware of a social media post that raised concern and needed to be immediately investigated. In partnership with the Muskego Police Department the social media post referencing a school shooting was quickly investigated. Per the investigation, Muskego Police Department deemed that our students and Warrior Community are not at risk and remain safe.
School safety is our highest priority. I am proud of how quickly our students responded and shared information with adults in our building. As unfortunate as today’s events are, it can create a powerful opportunity to reinforce some important messages with your students:
If you hear something concerning, say something immediately to an adult. Muskego is a very safe place because we all work together. Any concern will always be fully investigated.
Think before your post. Social Media is far more powerful than most young adults realize. What is posted is permanent and the minute you share an image electronically, it can be shared far beyond your intended audience. Additionally, you are not afforded the ability to share context or intent. Social media posts can have life altering consequences and we all need to remind our young adults the importance of appropriate language and content with our posts.
As a reminder, whether a student perceives making a threat as a joke or not a big deal, making a threat on a school could result in suspension, expulsion, and/or being charged as an adult with a felony. According to State of WI statue 947.015: “Whoever intentionally conveys or causes to be conveyed any threat or false information, knowing such to be false, concerning an attempt or alleged attempt being made or to be made to destroy any property by the means of explosives is guilty of a Class 1 felony.” Thank you for taking a moment to have this discussion with your students.
Thank you for your continuous support. Muskego High School is an outstanding place because of the students and families we work with.
As you have the opportunity to process through this event with your son or daughter, please know that we are open to answering any additional questions that may arise. Additionally, if you have any suggestions, concerns, or feedback please reach out as well.
Sincerely,
Todd Irvine
Principal
