HOMEWORK
We have a lot of kiddos that are not getting homework completed.
Math: They will have nightly math homework Monday thru Thursday, either on paper or on the computer.
Reading: They also have 120 minutes of reading each week from Friday to Friday that needs to be recorded in their agendas. This will be recorded in txconnect the second nine weeks. It will not be part of their average for grades, but you will know each week if they are completing their reading.
Back Row: Karen LaCombe, Melinda Hoover
Front Row: Jennifer Mackie , Reagan Habermacher, Melissa Reagan, Abbey LarremoreHere's what's happening in 5th grade this week:
Math
What's Happening This Week?
Wrapping Up
- Place Value : Rounding and Estimating
- Adding and Subtracting Decimals
- PACE: Fractions, Decimals and Percents- Ordering and Finding Percent of a Number
Check your student's planners for homework assignments this week. Math homework is assigned Monday through Thursday every week. Binders and planners should come home nightly. I will also be using the planner to communicate behavioral concerns during Math workshop. You may see tally marks if a certain off task behavior is address during independent or whole group learning time.
Science
Force Motion Energy
- Students will explore mechanical energy and designing experiments to test variables.
- CATAPULTS- This week we will be exploring using catapults in several lessons. Students will create their own investigation at the end of these investigations. HOMEWORK for this week is design and build a catapult you would like to test. These catapults can be as fancy or simple as you would like to make them. Student are to bring their catapults in as early as this Friday and ready to test on Monday when we return from break. More details will come on Tuesday in class. I have pictures of past catapult experiences below that you can use as reference.
Lab Journal: Your student's lab journal should be a good resource to review essential learning from hands on experiences and experiments. When reviewing for any content assessment, it along with Google Classroom resources are your student's best friend.
With that in mind, students are encouraged to do their best work and thoroughly explain using scientific vocabulary (new and reviewed). Grades often come from how they explain their thinking.
Language Arts
We will have a district benchmark on Wednesday, please make sure your child brings a book to read when they have completed their test.
- We will be reviewing fiction text again, story elements, summaries, and inferencing.
- This week we will wrap up our persuasive paper.
- We will be continuing our Novel groups.
- Starting Tuesday night they can use 30 minutes a week on Istation for reading homework. They can go to Activities or ISIP. All their log in information is in thier agendas
THIS WEEK READING LOG HOMEWORK WILL GO INTO THE GRADE BOOK!! This homework will not be part of your child's average, but I do want to use it as a way to communicate that your child is completing the weekly homework of 90 minutes of at home reading this week.
Social Studies
- We will begin learning states and capitals for the southern states. Our test for this will be December 7th.
- This week it is all about Colonial Williamsburg!! We will be learning about life in the colonies from jobs and schooling, to government. It is a fun week and we will wrap it up on Friday with a walk through Williamsburg. We have different activities going on in each classroom and kids will travel that day to each room.
- We are in need of volunteers to help with one of the stations, if you are available to help for even a short time that day please let me know.
