Principal's Corner
Greetings TBLA Families and Community Members,
We are rapidly approaching the close of the 2016-2107 school year. We are excited about the many positive accomplishments we’ve made together this year. There are many outstanding activities planned for students and parents as we move to the close of an extraordinary year (please review the dates and times of those events in the body of this newsletter).
TBLA administrators and staff are looking forward, with great anticipation, to new innovative academic opportunities that are being planned for our scholars next school year. Our enhanced curriculum will begin this summer with the implementation of the Summer Advantage Program. All families are strongly encouraged to take advantage of this summer opportunity to maintain academic skills gained during the course of the school year.
Students will have a wonderful chance to engage in strengthening reading and math skills, participate in Field Trips, Mentoring, be involved in enrichment activities such as Yoga, Drama, Arts, Music, Crafts, Sports, Chess Clubs and more.
Additionally, we are extremely excited about a new opportunity for our scholars to participate in STEM course work (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) via a program we will institute this fall called STEMnasium.
We are confident TBLA will continue to be the absolute best choice for students in the Gary community. It’s an amazing privilege to serve the academic, social and emotional needs of the families of Thea Bowman Leadership Academy.
We thank our CMO, Phalen Academies, and our phenomenal staff for leading the way and providing support for these innovative educational programs. We all look forward to finishing this year strong and opening next school year in an even better position to administer high quality educational opportunities for scholars in our charge.
Educationally yours,
Michael Collins

Attendance Counts
Indiana Law states that if a parent does not ensure that his or her child goes to school, the parent can be charged with failure to educate which is a Class B misdemeanor punishable by a maximum penalty of 180 days in jail and up to a $1000 fine.
Tardiness is disruptive to the educational process and is inconsiderate to both teachers and other student; therefore, it is imperative that students are punctual. All TBLA students should be in their classroom sitting in their seat by 8 a.m. daily or they are tardy. Tardy students must obtain a pass to enter a classroom late.
It is the responsibility of the parent to notify the school before 9:00 a.m. if their child will be absent that day. Please send a follow-up note when the student returns to school. An absence without documented reason is considered truant after 11 days or 88 class periods.
Parents if you do not have your Power School log in information, it is located on the bottom of your scholar's report card and progress report. You have live access to grades, attendance, and direct contact with teachers.
If you have any questions please contact Ms. Webb at vwebb@tbla.email or call 219-883-4826 (elementary) 219-944-3100 (middle/high).
