Principal's Post
Crooked Lake Families,
We had a great Open House turn out! Thank you for coming out and showing your support. Our staff heard a wonderful message about the Power of Purpose, and the importance of human connection from inspirational speaker Joe Beckman. At Crooked Lake, the message especially resonated with our staff. We will believe the connections and relationship with our students and families are important and make us stronger together as a community. Thank you for helping us build strong connections and trust this school year.
We hope that this Welcome Back slide deck, will serve as a reminder, or reference for general procedural information for the 2023 - 24 school year.
You can sign up for Fall conferences at MyConferenceTime with your child's classroom teacher on October 2, 3, or 5.
We will continue to focus as a school on our Character Strong curriculum with a word every month, as we build up our classrooms and school community. Our focus for the month of September is respect. We define respect as seeing value in all people and things and treating them with care.
During the week of September 25, we will have our Walk-a-thon, Spirit Week, and Community Picnic. The Crooked Lake Walk-a-thon fundraiser information will be coming through PTO in the coming weeks. This is a great way to support our students, and the fun programs backed by funds. Our Community Picnic is an annual fun get together on September 28 from 4:30 - 6:30. Thank you to our PTO for their amazing work with all of this. They are such an important part of our school.
There is concentrated effort on school safety again this school year with our Safety Week. Through drills and practice, we help our students, and staff to be prepared. If your child has any needs that we might not be aware of related to drills, please reach out so we can best meet their individual needs.
In the month of September, our 2nd - 5th grade will be completing their Measures of Academic Progress test which will give information about where students are at in math and reading. Testing times will vary by grade levels.
If you haven't finished your back to school registration, please go online and complete this process to provide updated information that is needed from year to year.
School Pay will continue to be our schools way to collect money for field trips throughout the school year. We will have those field trips planned with plenty of time if you would like to be involved. Please make sure you have completed the volunteer process linked below with our Volunteer Coordinator, Melissa Hayek.
You should have received your bus pick-up and drop-off times by now. At the start of the school year, you can expect delays as the bus routes are coordinated. Thank you for your patience. If you continue to experience delays, please reach out as needed. Transportation contacts are listed below.
Legacy (our neighbor) will be utilizing our bus loop temporarily at the start of the school year from 2:00 - 2:30. This will be a busy time in our parking lot. Please plan accordingly.
Thank you so much for helping us have a smooth start to year!
Take care.

The state’s Free School Meals program begins in 2023. Families will still need to apply to qualify for more educational benefits. Starting Sept. 5, 2023, every student may receive one breakfast and one lunch at no cost during the school year. The state’s Free School Meals program will cover the cost of one breakfast meal and one lunch meal for every student daily, however the cost of a la carte items, such as milk, other drinks, or extra meal items will not be covered. Students will need to have funds in their meal accounts to purchase any additional food items. If your family needs access to any other educational benefits available to your student, please visit ahschools.us/freereduced to complete an application.
The enrollment window for the 2023 Applications for Educational Benefits begins Aug. 1, 2023. Anoka-Hennepin asks that all families complete an online application to provide additional school funding to support all students in the district. By filling out this application, your school can earn funding and you can save money. Educational benefits include:
- Athletics fees: Eligible students may qualify for fees to be waived or reduced.
- SAT, ACT, AP Fees: Students may be eligible for discounted fees for academic tests and some lab fees.
- Other high school activities: Students may qualify for discounts on speech, debate, theater, band and others.
- Additional benefits and cost savings: Chromebook device protection, Comcast Internet Essentials discount, Amazon Prime membership discounts, discounted bus fares with Metro Transit, Xcel Energy account assistance, discounts at museums and theaters.

Our Media Center Paraeducator, Mrs. Kocak, and I have been working hard to prepare our library for students to enjoy this school year. Volunteer Voice
Welcome back! I’m so grateful for our Crooked Lake volunteers and their willingness to contribute their time and energy into making our community a better place. Volunteering is a wonderful way to be involved, stay connected, and make a difference. There are many volunteer opportunities at Crooked Lake. Here are just a few examples:
- Cafeteria & Classroom Helper
- Field Trips
- Picture Day
- Walk-a-thon
- Eveland Farms
- Track & Field
- Class Parties
There is already a HUGE need for volunteers. Our little learners need help in the cafeteria. Volunteers will assist with entering PINs, opening containers, etc while students start familiarizing themselves with the lunchroom routine. Please click Cafeteria Volunteer to sign-up. Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade teachers are looking for volunteers to help students learn their PIN. Volunteers will work with students (1:1 or small group) on learning their PIN and entering it on the keypad. Please click PIN Volunteer to sign up.
ALL volunteers are required to complete/update the 2023 - 2024 Crooked Lake Elementary Volunteer
Application form and Criminal History Record Release form.

Attention Crooked Lake Families! There is an app called FirstView! This app enables families to get real-time information on regular bus routes - in the palm of your hand! Features include email, push, and text notifications of any route changes.
Simply download FirstView from your device's app store. On-screen directions walk first-time users through the easy set-up process. Choose Minnesota and then Anoka-Hennepin from the drop-down menus. After doing so, the app will direct you to A-HConnect. Log in with your parent/guardian username and password (if you've forgotten your parent/guardian username or password, please call 763-506-HELP), the app will then automatically populate your student's information.
