MESSAGE FROM MRS. MOTZNY
Our fence is complete and all gate access is working. The gates are locked each week day until 6:00 p.m. They are unlocked from 6:00-9:00 p.m. On the weekends the gates are unlocked from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. The community may access the playground when the gates are unlocked. It is considered trespassing if visitors are on the playground while the gates are locked. Please do not put rocks or other objects in the gates to keep them propped open. This will cause damage to the gate mechanisms, and the gates will eventually not be able to close. The fence is providing security for our Sampson students and staff. Let's all do our part to keep our school safe.

Sampson Spelling Bee 2022-23
Sampson Students and Parents:
Here’s the buzz! On Friday, Nov. 4th, there will be a written spelling test for qualification in the oral Sampson Spelling Bee to be held on Wednesday, Dec. 14th from 4:15-5:45pm. Guests may attend the Sampson Bee.
This opportunity is open to all 3rd - 5th graders. The written test will be given during your child’s large group period, and a score of 100% is the goal to qualify for the oral spelling bee.
If your child is interested, please complete the attached permission slip and return it to the homeroom teacher as soon as possible (no later than Monday, October 17th). The list of words to study will be sent home once the permission slip is received.
**NEW FEATURE: If your child was a 2021-22 oral Sampson School Spelling Bee participant last year and would like to participate again, they qualify for a “fast pass”. These students will not need to take a written qualifying test but will receive the oral spelling bee study words after returning the permission slip.
If your child becomes our school Champion, the District Spelling Bee will be held on Tuesday, February 1, 2023, after school at the Berry Center. The winners will go on to a Regional Bee later in the spring.

From the library
Kindergarten and 1st grade had a great time with author and illustrator Ross Burach. He talked about being a writer and taught us how to draw! Because of the huge support with Ross Burach books, I had to do another order. All children who purchased books will receive their book in November. Thanks !
The book fair is upon us! Please see the attached schedule and information. We can't wait to celebrate reading and books at our book fair. Please plan to stop by on Thursday, October 20 for the book fair and our 20th birthday celebration!
For the month of October, we will be focusing on the character trait Integrity as we Bring Out the Best in CFISD. Integrity is knowing the difference between right and wrong and choosing to do the right thing, even when it is difficult. Below are links to an activity you can do at home with your child(ren) based on grade level.

Horizons (GT) Testing
The Open Referral Period for Mid-Year Testing (1st-5th) for the Horizons Program is open until Wednesday, November 30th. During this time, parents may choose to refer their child for testing. Parents can get a Parent Permission form for Horizons testing by sending a request to their child’s teacher. 1st-5th grade testing will take place in January and/or February and results will be received at the end of April. Services for 1st-5th grade students who qualify for the Horizons program will not start until next school year (2023-24).
**No Late Permission Forms will be accepted.**
All Kindergarten students will be screened for the Horizons program in the Spring.
Do you love the great outdoors and helping students learn? Then our third and fifth grade Nature Trails might be for you! Sampson third and fifth graders will attend Nature Trails on January 19th (math/sci homerooms) and January 20th (ELAR homerooms). We will need parents at the stations to help facilitate the activities and teach the concepts. Volunteers must be currently trained (year 2021 and up) since the Trails has a completely new curriculum. Please see the following for training details and know we will be coordinating grade level sign ups soon:
A big, bountiful THANK YOU to the families that were able to participate in Family Garden Day! The garden looks fabulous, and we can't wait to see our fall harvest grow. Your help is appreciated.
