SHS VISION STATEMENT
Stanwood Spartans are united in cultivating character, modeling respect, teaching leadership and connecting to community.
Welcome Back Spartans!
August 18, 2023
Parents/Guardians of Stanwood High School Students:
I’d like to briefly introduce myself and welcome you to Stanwood High School. While I am excited for what will be an excellent start to the 2023-2024 school year, I hope you and your student have had a productive summer. I am extremely honored to start the year as your new principal.
As I reflect back on my time as a teacher, administrator, coach, and parent, I think primarily about the impact we have as individuals on our larger community. I think about one of the keys to an effective team, no matter how large or complex, is that each person feels important and vital to the overall success of the team. Our focus this year is to build strong relationships in service building a strong community as a foundation for our growth that will allow us to dive deeper into learning. Helen Keller’s famous quote, “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much” is relevant to my beliefs.
As your Principal, I will walk alongside the staff and work intentionally to view all actions as an opportunity for growth as I want us to all have a growth mindset.
Another area that will have intentionality is ensuring every student feels included, valued, heard, and seen at SHS. This will provide our students with a safe place both mentally and physically to be better prepared for learning. Re-visiting, re-teaching, and updating our expectations regarding instruction, discipline, schoolwide expectations, and attendance will also be focus areas.
Our promise of, Every student in the Stanwood-Camano School District is empowered to learn in an inclusive setting and is prepared for the future of their choice, The Strategic Plan and our Annual Action Plan will guide all of our work.
The first day of school, Tuesday, September 5th will be for Freshmen and students new to Stanwood High School-Only. This mandatory full-day event will allow our incoming freshmen to learn SHS’s exceptions to enable an easier transition from middle to high school.

After lunch, students will follow a modified schedule, which will provide them an opportunity to locate their classes and meet their teachers. The school day will begin at 7:40 am and will end at 2:10 pm. Buses will arrive at 7:35 am and depart the high school at 2:15 pm.

School Reminders:
We offer two lunches at Stanwood High School. A student's lunchtime is based on their fourth-period teacher. The teachers on the first and second floors will have First Lunch. Teachers on the third floor have Second Lunch (exceptions to that are Mrs. Kelly Bowie, Mrs. Gammell, and Mrs. Ray as they have first lunch). Students will be able to purchase a lunch in the commons area at Stanwood High School or bring their own lunch from home. Students can look for the lunch posters around campus to find out which lunch they have. To apply for free and reduced lunch, please click here for information or stop by the main office with questions.
During the first days of school students will review the student handbook, which includes the school's discipline policy, dress code, and closed campus policy. This will be completed during advisory sessions. Make sure you review the handbook with your student (the handbook will be available on the high school website or you may request a hard copy from the main office).
A reminder that cell phone are not allowed to be used during instructional time unless a staff member has approve of the use for instructional purposes. Students who use their cell phones during instructional time to text, make phone calls, and take photos/videos will have their phone confiscated by an administrator or security officer. The phone will be returned to the student at the end of the day.
Absences must be cleared within 72 hours. If absences are not excused, students will not be allowed to make up assignments.
Throughout a student's four years of high school, they will complete a number of state and local graduation requirements. This includes a High School and Beyond Plan and a graduation pathway. One of the pathways students can choose is to take and pass state assessments known as the SBA (Smarter Balanced Assessment). Students receive information on these requirements during their advisory period as well as from their counselors.
Parent/guardian involvement is a critical piece of the high school process. We welcome your input. Please contact us by phone or by email. A resource is the school website, which lists all staff members’ email addresses. In addition, this newsletter has important information pertaining to your student. If you have any questions, please contact the high school at (360) 629-1300.
We look forward to a great year, and we hope to see you at our upcoming events.

Attendance Policies and Procedures
Philosophy
Good school attendance is important for success in school and as a foundation for successful careers and relationships. The highlight of a quality educational experience is the interaction of an enthused, knowledgeable teacher and an interested student. Those not in class are denied this experience. The best policy for students and parents is to prearrange all necessary absences before the student is absent. Parents/guardians may prearrange by calling or sending a note to the Attendance Secretary.
Because it is the legal responsibility of teachers to maintain accurate records of student attendance, the Board of Directors has established attendance criteria that emphasize the importance of good attendance for student achievement. The following procedures will be in effect at Stanwood High School:
Attendance will be taken each period.
All students, regardless of age, must follow all school rules, including attendance rules.
(RCW 28A.225)
Procedure for excusing your child's absences
Absences must be excused within 72 hours of the student's return to school.
Parents and guardians may excuse absences by calling the attendance secretary at 360-629-1305, through Absence Notification using their Family Access password, by emailing kmccurry@stanwood.wednet.edu, or by providing a note to the attendance office.
Notes, voicemail, or email should include the first AND last name of the student, the date of the absence, the reason for the absence, and the parent or guardian's signature.
Stanwood High School defines excused absences as absences due to illness, appointment, or family business. Oversleeping, car trouble, traffic congestion, and missing the bus are not considered excused absences.
If the student has classes at Stanwood High School AND Lincoln Hill High School, you must contact BOTH schools to excuse absences.
If your child arrives late to school:
Students arriving late to school must sign in on the attendance log sheet located in the main office. If a parent or guardian is not able to come in and sign for the student, then they must call the attendance office or send a note excusing the tardiness. The student must write the time of their arrival on the note.
If your child needs to leave school early:
If a student needs to leave school early, the student must bring a note from the parent/guardian requesting the absence. The student should bring the note to the Attendance Office before school and they will receive an "Early Dismissal Pass" allowing them to sign themselves out of school.
Leaving campus without permission will not be excused after the fact.
Students should never leave school without properly checking out with the Attendance Office. If an emergency arises, which requires the student to leave school, the parent or guardian must notify the school.
It is best practice to send a note in the morning to have the student get an early dismissal pass. This prevents interrupting a teacher during class and the student can show the teacher the pass and leave quietly.
ATTENDANCE NOTIFICATIONS TO PARENTS/GUARDIANS
Auto dialer: Automated telephone calls are made to inform guardians of one (1) or more unexcused absences from class each school day.
To view Stanwood High School's Attendance Policy in full detail please refer to "Attendance Procedures" in Stanwood High School's Student Handbook in electronic form HERE.
Mental Health Update for Attendance
During the 2022 legislative session, House Bill 1834 was passed. This bill directed the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) to categorize a student's absence from school due to a mental health reason, as an excused absence due to illness, health condition, or medical appointment.
The updated language for an excused absence now states: physical health or mental health symptoms, illness, health condition, or medical appointment for the student or person for whom the student is legally responsible. Examples of symptoms, illness, health conditions, or medical appointments include but are not limited to, medical, counseling, mental health wellness, dental, optometry, pregnancy, and behavioral health treatment (which can include in-patient or out-patient treatment for chemical dependency or mental health).
Transportation Information
Parents/guardians are able to access individual student transportation information online Versatrans Elink is the portal to access bus routes, stop times, locations, and the bus your child will be riding. At the login page the "User Name" and "Password" is your student's 7-digit identification number.
The Versatrans elink is HERE.
Please contact your child's school for more information regarding login and the Transportation department directly regarding busing at 360-629-1229. For more information on Transportation and Busing please click HERE.

News From the Nurse
Hello SHS families!
We look forward to seeing your smiling faces back on campus this fall! Just a few reminders as we start the year!
Please remember to keep your students home if they are ill! Please keep your student at home comfy, resting, and tucked into bed if they have had a fever, vomiting, or diarrhea in the last 24 hours. If your student's cough is severe and disruptive, they need more time at home. Students who have been prescribed antibiotics for a contagious condition are often ready to return to school 24 hours after the first dose. Please contact your school nurse if you have any questions about whether or not your student should stay home.
Care plans, medication authorizations, and medications can be brought into the school the week of August 28th, from 8 am-2:30 pm. Please call in advance to ensure a nurse is available to take your paperwork and meds. If your student has a life-threatening health condition, they cannot start school until paperwork and medications are in place. Please email hschutza@stanwood.wednet.edu with any questions of concerns.
Schools in Washington are required to provide the parents and guardians of students entering 6th through 12th grades with information on meningococcal disease. Meningitis is an infection of the fluid of a person’s spinal cord and the fluid that surrounds the brain. There are two distinct kinds – viral and bacteria, with each type exhibiting similar symptoms. Viral tends to be less severe and students can get better without treatment. Bacterial can be very severe and may result in brain damage, hearing loss, disability, and death. Symptoms may develop over one to two days and include high fever and chills, stiff neck, headache, light sensitivity, vomiting, and sometimes a rash, coma, and seizures. Meningitis is much less contagious than the common cold or influenza. It is transmitted person-to-person through respiratory and throat secretions such as kissing or coughing. It may also be spread by sharing beverage containers. For additional information, please visit www.cdc.gov; the Snohomish Health District website at www.snohd.org; or check with your private healthcare provider.
If your student is not current with the required vaccines, nursing will contact you to discuss your plans and the district's obligation to protect the health of all students.

Students are not allowed in the parking lot for any reason without permission from a school official. Students may not “hang out” or sit in their vehicles during the school day including during lunch. Students are to ensure all needed items are gathered from their vehicle upon arrival to school. Violation of these rules will result in disciplinary action.
Food and Drinks on Campus
We encourage students to bring water bottles and use the water bottle filler stations located
throughout the school. Students can bring outside drinks and food to school. However, we
don’t accept food deliveries from companies, such as Uber or Grubhub. When
parents/guardians drop off food items for students, the students need to pick up the food in

Student Dress
Preserving a beneficial learning environment and assuring the safety and well-being of all students are the primary concerns of the board of directors. Students' choices in matters of dress should be made in consultation with their parents.
Student dress shall only be regulated when, in the judgment of school administrators, there is a reasonable expectation that:
A. A health or safety hazard shall be presented by the student's dress or appearance including possible membership in a gang or hate group;
B. Damage to school property shall result from the student's dress; or
C. A material and substantial disruption of the educational process will result from the student's dress or appearance.
For the purpose of this policy, a material and substantial disruption of the educational process may be found to exist when a student's conduct is inconsistent with any part of the educational mission of the school district. Prohibited behavior includes the use of lewd, sexual, drug, tobacco, or alcohol-related messages, and gang-related apparel.
The uniforms of nationally recognized youth organizations, and clothing worn in observance of a student’s religion, are not subject to this policy.
The superintendent shall establish procedures providing guidance to students, parents, and staff regarding appropriate student dress in school or while engaging in extracurricular activities. Such procedures shall ensure that any student wearing, carrying, or displaying gang-related apparel, exhibiting behavior or gestures which symbolize gang membership, or causing or participating in activities that intimidate or affect the attendance of another student shall be asked, with notice to their parents, to make appropriate corrections and be subject to discipline if the corrections are not undertaken.

ACCESSING PERMITS:
There are directions on how to access an instruction permit on the SHS Traffic Safety website. Please read the information carefully so you will be able to obtain your student driver's WDL number. As soon as you have registered your student driver for SHS Traffic Safety please send Mr. Knight your student-driver's WDL number. Mr. Knight has to enter their WDL number into the DOL website, then ten days before the start of class your student-driver will be able to get their instruction permit. They can either get an online non-photo instruction permit or make an appointment with the DOL to get an instruction permit with a photo. Student drivers can get their permit starting September 2, 2023.
