Exploratories/PE
As we are perched headlong on the far edge of rotation 3, our young artists are neck-deep in bringing their current projects to fruition.
The 6th graders spent a week using clay to sculpt a birds-eye view of coy fish in a pond. The pieces have been fired and the kids are now adding color to their works. They’re using liquid watercolors which offer a muted pastel feeling and brings the piece to a soft finish.
The 7th grade Has just wrapped up a mixed media piece using watercolor, marker, and colored pencil. For our next and final project, we are going to create contour line drawings of our shoes. The students will start with an exercise known as “blind contour” drawing in which they will draw their shoe without looking at the paper (this exercise always provides a lot of laughs when the kids finish and get to look at the drawing they made). After this warm up, the students will make a clean life-sized drawing of their shoe and add background and color.
Our 8th graders are now painting the clay monsters they sculpted last week. Like the 6th graders, they will be using liquid watercolor. The sculptures came out of the kiln looking nothing short of spectacular and I’m excited to see the finished works in color.
MUSIC
As rotation 3 comes to a close, our 3 grade levels are wrapping up their extended projects, and trying to squeeze in one more song on instruments. In Guitars (6 & 7), we just finished the last of 5 entries for our Folk Song Exploration project, which is focused on exercising our ability to verbalize (in writing) our response to music, both in what we observe and how it makes us feel. We are also having fun learning a little about the Lads from Liverpool, and learning to play Let It Be. In Keyboards (8), we are adding the finishing touches to our Independent Studies, which take a close look at some of our favorite songs and examines our emotional/experiential connections to them. We are also working hard on learning to play piano with two hands simultaneously, and having fun putting that skill to work with our friends in duets!
21st CENTURY SKILLS
As we near the finish line for third rotation, 21st Century Skills students are completing a variety of projects. In 8th grade, the classes have assumed the role of travel agents as they plan a trip for a family of four to different points of interest around the United States. The 7th grade students have begun planning for their room makeover assignment. For this, they will interview a client, create vision boards, and create a budget for the necessary items going into the room. The 6th graders are doing market research as they design and plan the creation of a cereal box. It will be exciting to see how these products turn out!
HEALTH
The 3rd rotation of Health will be wrapping up on February 2nd. 8th grade students should have completed and submitted their Teenage Pregnancy Prevention Project on 1/24. 7th Grade has wrapped up their Bullying, Violence and Hate Prevention unit and are beginning to cover their Mental Health unit. 6th Grade has been exploring Body Systems through group exploration while rotating through stations. Any incomplete work by students of any grade can still be submitted for credit.
WORLD LANGUAGE:
Last week we just finished talking about Family members' vocabulary in Chinese. Students should be able to know how to speak and recognize them in Chinese pinyin. This week we are learning about Colors, students should know how to say their favorite color in a sentence(:我喜欢wo xi huan+color:I like+color )and they should be able to know how to say what color are they wearing in a sentence:(我穿了Wo chuan le...:I'm wearing). We also learned about traditions about Chinese New Year and what Chinese people do to celebrate it. We made a paper lantern together to celebrate "the year of the rabbit" in Class!
P.E.
All three grade levels are finishing up their 2nd round of our volleyball unit. Our 2 day tournament will close things out on Monday and Tuesday, January 30th and 31st. During the month of February we will begin three units: Team Handball (actually played in the Olympics), indoor games and another block of days in our fitness room. In late February we will transition to our basketball unit and continue to work in our fitness room. As we stretch further into the second semester, please double check that each student has proper clothing/footwear for PE class. If you have any questions along the way, please don’t hesitate to contact your student’s PE teacher.
ORCHESTRA
Our orchestra students are working hard to prepare for the D200 Solo and Ensemble event on February 11. The exact performance times for this will be released very soon! Our next concert is on March 7 at 6 PM in the auditorium at Woodstock high school! Can’t wait for you all to see how hard the kids have been working!
BAND
Since the new year started, we’ve welcomed our new student teacher, Miss Morin from Illinois State University. She’s jumped right in and has been working very well with all of the band students. All of the band students will be participating in our D200 Solo and Ensemble event on February 11 at Woodstock High School. Your child will be performing with their small group sometime in the morning. The schedule will be ready very soon! The 8th graders have been mentoring the 6th graders and they have all been doing a fantastic job! Our next full band concert is Wednesday, March 9 at Woodstock High School at 7pm. It’s been a busy, but fun start to second semester!
News from the Library with Mrs McCoy and Mrs White!
Graphic novels have become some of the most popular books in the Creekside Library.
Graphic novels are books that use both illustrations and words to tell a story. They come in many diverse genres and are great for even the most reluctant readers. For a long time, graphic novels were considered as the inferior form of literature, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, they help foster a love of reading and the presence of illustrations helps aid visual and verbal literacy. - Markam Public Library.New Kid
