A Note from our Executive Director:
Welcome to the 2017- 18 school year!
This new school year brings a few changes in leadership. Mrs. Elena Bates is our permanent principal at WT White High School. Miss Holly Wallace is now the new ED Walker Middle School Principal. Juan Almaraz is serving as acting principal at Marcus Elementary. We are ready to accomplish great things at all of our campuses with a continued focus on academic success for all students. We look forward to growing our partnerships with our families and businesses to ensure every student is prepared for a fabulous future.

Melody2017 DISTINCTIONS
CONGRATULATIONS W. T. White High School for earning all 7 possible distinctions and Herbert Walker Bush Elementary School for earning all 6 possible distinctions from the Texas Education Agency for 2017. WTW is part of the very small 5.3% of high schools in Texas to earn ALL 7 distinctions.
Distinction designations are awarded to campuses based on achievement in performance indicators relative to a group of 40 campuses of similar type, size, and student demographics. Depending on campus grade levels and type, the number of potential distinction designations can vary. Up to seven distinction designations can be earned for:
• Academic Achievement in English Language Arts/Reading;
• Academic Achievement in Mathematics;
• Academic Achievement in Science;
• Academic Achievement in Social Studies;
• Top 25 Percent: Student Progress;
• Top 25 Percent: Closing Performance Gaps; and

Facility Updates
Exciting times to be a WTW Longhorn! W.T. White HS is starting school with a new wing. Nathan Adams Elementary will be opening their new PK wing in the Spring of 2018.
W.T. White HS and Walker MS have million dollar upgrades and new construction with bond funds starting in the summer 2018. Exciting times ! AND THIS IS JUST FACILITIES!
The HUB celebrated the workers that worked long and hard to have WTW ready for the first day of school.
ELIZABETH HOLGUIN - 5TH Grade
Ms. Holguin is new to 5th grade and has done a fantastic job of preparing her classroom for small group instruction, student collaboration, and college and career readiness.

Tuesday, September 19 - Family Writing Night-5:30-6:30 pm. All families are invited to the school auditorium.
Friday, September 29 - Coffee with the Principal 8:30 am-9:15 am. Mr. Luna will be meeting parents in the library.
MS. SAPERA - KINDER
Ms. Sapera, a kindergarten teacher, was part of the Guided Reading cohort last year. She spent many days at Bush this summer making sure her room was set up for guided reading with her classroom books leveled and color-coded. Ms. Sapera goes above and beyond to make sure her students develop a love of learning at an early age.
You are invited to attend:
Friday, September 1 - Parent Leadership Academy, 8:30 in the library. Parents are invited to a information sharing from a variety of members from the community, i.e., Brookhaven College, Dallas Police Department, MetroCrest Family Services, etc.
Friday, September 8 -Grandparents Day Program. Students are encouraged to invite their grandparents to come to the school, meet the teacher, see their classroom and what they are working on. Breakfast and program included.
Thursday, September 21 - 1St Annual GHWB Family Picnic, Time TBD. An after school event in conjunction with the PTA to bring our George Bush families together for fun, food and activities.
September 18 - 22 - Education: Go Get It Week. Students explore College and University opportunities and goals for the future with a different theme for each day of the week.
Tuesday, September 26 - Boy Scout Recruitment Event, 3:00 in the auditorium. Boys ages 6 - 12 and their parents are invited to learn about the purpose, benefits, leadership opportunities and activities of the joining the Boy Scouts.
Friday, September 29 - Spirit Rally, Time TBD. A school-wide celebration at the end of the first 6 weeks grading period, includes recognition for student academic, leadership, and attendance progress.
JESSICA GIBBS - 1ST GRADE
This year Ms. Gibbs will be co-teaching a mixed aged group.
Ms. Gibbs is committed to creating and maintaining an orderly, trusting, and caring environment where teaching and learning are evident, and students are empowered to reach their full academic potential. Her teaching is backed by data and features blended station rotation where students work together in small groups, collaborate and learn to think critically and receive targeted instruction or intervention at the teacher's table.
CHRISTINE RODRIGUEZ - ADL Classroom
The ADL classroom is where students will gain an understanding of their place in the world and the gifts that they have to offer. This is where the student develops what they want their future to look like, as well as knowledge of the skills needed to reach that goal. The classroom is such an important place in the growth of a child. It is important to understand the ways in which to affect this environment in order to receive maximum effectiveness in instruction. Creating this type of classroom is important for both the student and the community.
Summer Celebrations:
Our Caillet Garden Club met every week during the summer. Our vegetables are growing by leaps and bounds! Every week our students took some fresh vegetables home to share with their families. Their first official meeting after the summer is on September 1st. We are inviting all of our community who is interested to please join us. We meet every Friday from 3:00-4:00. If you are interested in participating please contact Mrs. Farris efarris@dallasisd.org.
Grace Bible Church provided a beautiful surprise for our staff! They served us breakfast and afterwards they helped with our building needs.
Students were very excited to receive their new backpacks and school supplies from Royal Haven Church.

We will be hosting our first Coffee with the Principal on September 9, 207 at 7:30 am. This will be held at our Caillet school library. We are asking for our parents, our community and our partners to please attend. We will be sharing important school information.
GINA DURAN - PreK
It's never too soon to start planting the seed for college readiness. Our fabulous PreK teacher, Gina Duran, has her room ready for scholars with college-themed stations. Gina has been preparing scholars for college for 8 years total, 5 years with Dallas ISD, and this is her first year here at DeGolyer. We are so glad she is a part of Team DeGolyer!!

ASHLEY FORTNER - 3/4 Math
Ms. Fortner has the highest student survey results in the school, 93% of her students passed the STAAR in her first year of teaching STAAR math, and she is only in her second year of teaching! She and her students truly embrace a college going culture with high expectations.

Monday, September 11 - Kindle Kick-Off Pep Rally, 12:15 - 2:55 in the auditorium. All 3rd-5th grade students will receive a Kindle Fire for one-to-one technology based teaching in the classroom. A huge thank you to the Jiv Daya Foundation for this fantastic resource!
SOLAR ECLIPSE
The Gooch Faculty celebrated the upcoming year with some impromptu science watching of the solar eclipse. It was great for the teachers to share the excitement of the solar eclipse.
Carol Shelton - 4th Grade
Ms. Shelton supports the college initiative in the W. T. White feeder pattern. She also presented at several job-a-likes and the WT White Feeder Pattern day.

Reanna Wilborn - English Teacher
Ms. Wilborn was given a different classroom this year. She came in over the summer, repainted her room and created a warm and welcoming environment for her students. You will always find a smile on her face and a willingness to help anyone she can.

Ms. Scott - 6th Grade Reading
Mrs. Scott is a sixth grade reading teacher who has a colorful and bright classroom. She instills the love and importance of reading in her students. She was born and raised in Paris, TX where they have their very own Eiffel Tower with a red cowboy hat! Her husband was her middle school crush back in the ‘80s. She has 2 stepsons, ages 17 and 20, a 4 year old niece, and a 16 year old nephew. She graduated from the University of North Carolina with a literature degree and reading is her favorite thing ever. She makes her classroom bring and cheerful because she wants her students to feel happy when they are there. She loves teaching 6th grade!

PETE HAMMEL - Algebra 1
Please mark your calendar and join W. T. White at our PTSA and SBDM Meetings! SBDM and PTSA will meet on the first Monday of each month, except in September when it will meet on Tuesday, September 5th. SBDM meetings will start at 5:30 and the PTSA meetings will begin at 6:30. Meeting dates are: September 5, October 2, November 6, December 4, February 5, March 5, April 9, and May 7. All members of the school community are welcome to attend. Mark you calendar to join us for Feeder Pattern Night at the WTW Longhorn football game on Friday, October 6. Students from all W.T. White feeder pattern elementary and middle schools will be admitted to the WT White varsity football game FREE if they are wearing a school shirt.
