The Renaissance
------------------Vanessa D. 3 Period--------------------
What was the change?
The renaissance was a change in art, and beliefs in human accomplishment. During this era, the people began to distance themselves from the church which created a secular religion. The Renaissance was known as a "rebirth" of art & learning. It all started in Italy because of the great development of trade there. Their was a new way of thinking called "humanism" which centered humans as some of the most important factors, instead of the church.
Who were the people associated with the change?
Leonardo Da Vinci (1452-1519)
Leonardo Da Vinci was crucial to the Renaissance due to his powerful works of art that used light to express depth. This was common in works of art during this era. Da Vinci had a creative method of writing; he wrote backwards. In the picture above, their is a sketch of one of his most impacting inventions "the flying machine" and this also displays some of his writing.
The Medici Family
The Medici family contributed to the Renaissance era by ruling Florence and expanding their learning. They were a wealthy family that banked Florence and made it a city known for its wonderful artwork today. This family did not inherit their wealth but gained the wealth due to their wonderful services to the pope who granted them the right to control Florence's money. They were known as
"god's banker."
Michaelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564)
During the Renaissance, many works of art looked perfect and realistic; many of the sculptures showed nudity. It was a very famous type of art that Michelangelo expressed a lot throughout his sculptures, such as in one of his most important, "David" (image of the sculpture above).
How did the change impact society at the time?
Once times began to change, people started to think differently because they were independent from the church and began a new way of thinking called Humanism. Humanism was based of the classical ideas of Greece and Rome & made people start thinking that education was the key to making the world a better place. The church was not as important as it was in the "Dark ages" so people did not believe in the church and started to believe humans were important as individuals and that they didn't have to listen to anyone.
How is that change evidenced in today's modern society?
In today's modern society, we have churches and museums that contain numerous works of art from the Renaissance era. In the picture to the left, there are carvings made in the Renaissance of important people from that time.
Back in the Renaissance, priests would control schools are students were taught by monks. This impacted today's society because now students are taught by teachers-not monks- and schools are not religion based.
