The Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, Cycle A Sunday, June 18, 2017

Gospel Reading
John 6:51-58
Jesus says, “I am the living bread.”

Family Connection

Our faith teaches us that when we gather to celebrate Mass, Jesus is present to us. The bread and wine truly become the Body and Blood of Christ. This is what we mean by the word transubstantiation: Jesus makes himself present to all who receive the Body and Blood of Christ.

If there are children in your family who have already celebrated their First Holy Communion, invite them to share their memories of this special day. If there are family photos taken on this occasion, bring them out and share them together. Adults in the family may also share memories or photos that they have of their First Communion. Then read together today’s Gospel, John 6:51–58. Reflect together on what Jesus means when he calls himself the “living bread.” Recall that every time we receive the Eucharist, Jesus keeps the promise he made in today’s Gospel—those who eat his flesh and drink his blood will remain forever connected to him. Perhaps family members can share what it means for them to receive Jesus in the Eucharist. Together thank God for this gift of Holy Communion. Pray together the Lord’s Prayer or today’s Psalm.

Exciting Program Changes for September!

Students in grades 1-4 can look forward to some exciting 'options' next year!

Rather than try to run noon hour clubs where teachers and students only have 20 minutes to participate in choir, earth club, garden club or running club, we are going to set up a variety of clubs that will run for 80 minutes on Friday afternoons, that students can sign up for. They then participate in that club with other students and a teacher. After the 6 weeks they can then choose a different club, or register for the same one. FUN!

You are probably asking, "What about their school work?". The government asks that all that we do in our schools works into both Literacy and Numeracy. All the clubs will have outcomes that students meet regarding Programs of Study, and there will be an assessment piece to all clubs.

We are excited about taking time on Friday afternoons to run options for students and provide different opportunities for your children.

Some of the clubs might be

  • cooking
  • running club
  • math games
  • choir
  • earth club
  • garden club
  • maker-spaces
  • tinker-lab
  • creative writing
  • technology
  • arts and crafts
  • ukulele!

Some options might have a small fee to cover the cost of the materials, while many others are free.

We will still be offering swimming lessons in the fall ( full fee to be charged) as well as inline skating, faith and wellness day, and many more activities within the school day.

With these and all the great academic classes in the school, your children are receiving the best education possible at Madonna.

Stay tuned for more information on all of these programs!

Reminder, no school supplies to buy!

With the passing of Bill One, the government is mandating that our schools pay for and supply students with their required school supplies. Things that we on the school supply lists in the past, will now be provided to your child at school on their first day. So, at the end of the school year, your child will not be bringing home a school supply list, but a request letter for some of the optional items their teacher will use in the class next year.

These 'optional items' ( Kleenex, hand wipes, headphones, and the like), will still be requested for children to bring in, however they are not 'mandatory' but appreciated in the classroom.

There will still be fees for Swimming lessons, field trips, or some projects...however...it is very important to note that these are Optional for your child......but, if you choose not to pay for the activity, your child will not participate.

We need students!

Please spread the word in your neighborhood that Madonna is THE place to learn!

We are preparing that there may only be one ECS class next year due to low enrollment! Yikes!!!!

Only one ECS class means that the future of our school is in jeopardy. Even if you do not have little ones going into ECS can you still blitz your neighbors, friends, family and lets continue to be the best Primary School in Sherwood Park!

There is still space in both our AM and PM programs.

We are revamping the program with new class furniture with a focus on Purposeful Play and professional development for the staff in the program....plus learning in a fabulous faith based environment. Children of all faiths are welcome. NO FEES either!!!!

Register online here or Call Mrs Roberts in the office at 780 467-7972

Thank You!

Madonna staff and students would like to formally thank St Sophia Ukrainian Catholic Parish for their generous donation to the school. The funds will be used to help purchase collaborative seating for the school chapel!
