Buckingham Elementary School
The Mighty Knight Connection - September 2013 - Issue 1
A Message from the Principal
Welcome to the 2013-2014 School Year!
It continues to be a privilege and honor to be the principal of Buckingham Elementary School and I would like to welcome you to the new school year – Buckingham’s 58th year in educating children! The supportive relationship between home and school is essential to a successful year – especially how it positively impacts the academic progress of all our students. Without a doubt, great things can happen for our children when we all work together! Throughout the year, The Mighty Knight Connection E-Newsletter will be published to keep parents informed with school and PTO happenings. In addition, please be sure to visit our school and teacher websites as a means of communication – and know we will continue to update and modify information so it is current and informative. Again, welcome to what promises to be a rewarding 2013-2014 school year!
Mr. Karl Funseth, Principal

NAESP: Report to Parents - Make Every Day Count: Boost School Attendance
"To stay on track in school, students need to be present every day. Missing 18 or more days of school in a year puts a child's high school graduation at risk, according to BoostUp.org, a nation dropout prevention campaign. Being absent for just two days every month of the school year can put a child behind academically..."

CB East Patriot Players Present - The Sound of Music!
This fall, CB East Patriot Players are performing The Sound of Music - November 22, 23, & 24. In this beautiful family musical, Maria, a postulant at Nonnberg Abbey, brings music, understanding and love into the home of Captain von Trapp and his seven children. Most of the cast will be high school students; however, the script does call for younger children. Hopefully, we will be able to cast 2-4 elementary age students as Von Trapp children (depending on high school casting.) We have included elementary age students in the past for various roles, and the experience is extremely rewarding!
Auditions for The Sound of Music Von Trapp children are open to elementary age students who are siblings of Patriot Players. We would ALSO like to open auditions to our two closest elementary schools: Buckingham and Cold Spring.
Auditions for elementary school students will take place Thursday, September 12 or Friday, September 13 @ 5 pm in the CB East Auditorium (parents should bring their child to ONE of those audition dates.) Students must fill out an audition form and be prepared to sing the chorus of "Do, Re, Mi". Practices for elementary age children will be some weekdays after 4 pm and on Saturdays.
Please click on the Audition Form link to review additional information.

School Happenings
Summer Preparations in time for Teachers and Students!
With the late end to the 2012-13 school year, the shorter summer tested our resolve as we prepared the school for the first days of staff and students. Buckingham continues to monitor its facilities, develop plans, and initiate updates to beautify the school - Where teachers are proud to work and students are excited to learn! Once again, our meticulous custodial/maintenance crew rose to meet our goals with preparing each classroom and hallway - as Mr. Scott Thomson and the custodial crew provided us their very best efforts! Mrs. Janice Petrie managed the office area and monitored the summer “to-do” list, and Mr. Funseth developed schedules, finalized student placements, and completed staffing needs. Here we are - ready to welcome students back to our hallways and their new classrooms for another exciting year!
Kindergarten Orientation - Welcome to Buckingham!
On August 28th, new students and their parents visited Buckingham for Kindergarten and Bus Orientation. Mr. Funseth introduced staff and shared some experiences on what to expect for the first day of school. The children learned about bus safety and took a ride with their parents. The children also received a tour of the school while Mrs. Roberts shared important information for families. Everyone seemed excited for the first day of school - an important day for all of these young students!
