Message From Principal Engdall
What a great return we had this week. Friends and communities back together and lots of joyous noise and work! We are looking forward to all our experiences this year that mimic life pre-covid to the greatest extent possible.
Please take note of these changes on campus:
The cafeteria is now open from 8:05-8:25 for breakfast for our preschool and kindergarten children only. After eating, they remain in the cafeteria until their teachers pick them up at 8:30.
Our elementary and middle school children, 1st -8th grade now eat breakfast at their classrooms.
The playground is now open in the morning from 8:05-8:30 for the 1st -8th grade children only.
Lunch is served in the classrooms for the preschool and kindergarten children.
Lunch is served in the cafeteria for the 1st -8th grade children.
As much as we love to have you on campus, please refrain from entering the classrooms and the interior of our campus in the morning at drop off. Mornings for our staff are spent overseeing the children or preparing the classrooms for an enriching day of instruction. Should you need to communicate with your child’s teacher regarding the classroom, please email them. Should you need to report a health issue about your child, please speak with Nurse Rose. For all other needs, our office is open from 8:05- 4:45 daily. You may ring the front doorbell or call us at 602-257-3914. Thank you for doing your part to ensure that our staff has adequate time to prepare the environments for every child, every day.
Please plan to join us for our first Site Council/PTA meeting on Wednesday, August 17th. Site Council will be held at 5:30. We will be presenting our School Safety Plan. PTA will be held at 6:00. Pizza and childcare will be available.
Wishing you the very best,
Principal Engdall

Message From Shaily Currie
At Shaw, we use the i-Ready online program as the diagnostic assessment tool for grades K-8. Students will take the i-Ready diagnostic assessment three times this school year. The Fall diagnostic window opens on August 8th for 1st through 8th-grade students. Please refer to the diagnostic calendar below. To prepare for assessment, we recommend students get a good night's rest, have a healthy breakfast, as well as bring headphones. Please reach out to your child’s teacher with any questions you may have.

Message From Garden
Greetings!
What a pleasure to see everyone back on campus! It was a hot and lonely summer. We have quite the year planned for the garden. As you may have seen, the space is overgrown with Bermuda grass. I let the weeds go wild over the summer so that the 7th/8th grades can shake off the summer dust by removing them. Big thanks ahead of time to our middle schoolers. They once again have their work cut out for them.
We will be solarizing our garden beds until September. This entails a lot of weeding, composting and covering of the beds. The upper elementary and middle schoolers will be responsible for this task. We will begin on August 8th.
Our August block is seed harvesting! I have been collecting seed pods and flower heads over the summer so that students can extract the seeds and identify the different types. We learned about seeds last August. There will be some recurring seeds and some new ones. We will categorize and enumerate them. Some will be used for planting and others will be sent home with the students. Plant them in September and watch them grow!
The bottle cap drive will remain throughout the year. Save your assorted plastic bottle caps. We take all sizes and colors! We are working on purchasing the required supplies and should be assembling our mural boards in the fall. Stay tuned for more on the mural project. The class that collects the most bottle caps will be rewarded with an ice cream party in the spring.
Again, what a pleasure to be back at Shaw. I’m looking forward to this year. The garden is a very cyclical place. That means that some of our blocks will be recurring. We will build on the information that we already learned and introduce some new material. We will try some new crops this year and introduce more rules and organization into our shared space. It is going to be an adventure!

Home Depot gift cards are always appreciated. Continue bringing your aluminum cans, coffee grounds and eggshells. You can leave them on the table outside the front office.
Best wishes,
Mr. Moench
