Sunnyvale PD launches full operations, takes over from Dallas Sheriff's Office

On Oct. 1, 2019, the Town of Sunnyvale hired Police Chief Andrew Hawkes to lead the Town to the launch of our very own Police Department. The ultimate goal was to stand up the Police Department in one year.

On Oct. 1, 2020, Sunnyvale Police Department officially took over operations from the Dallas Sheriff's Office. It was a challenging, yet rewarding year to make this change happen. Great job to Chief Hawkes, the Town Council, and the entire Sunnyvale team for making this happen!

The Town would also like recognize and say "thank you" to the Dallas Sheriff's Office and it's deputies for the time, dedication, service, and safety they continuously provided for the Sunnyvale community over the last 30+ years.

Sunnyvale PD will be hosting a "virtual" National Night Out on Tuesday, Oct. 6. Check out the video below to see how you and your family can participate!

Dallas County Public Health Committee releases COVID-19 guidance for Halloween

The Dallas County Public Health Committee issued guidance for Halloween and related activities. Given the current risk level of "orange" for COVID-19 and the moderate risk of transmission in Dallas County, the Public Health Committee is not recommending routine and traditional Halloween activities.

Unsafe and Not Recommended Activities:

  • Halloween gatherings, events, or parties with non-household members.
  • Carnivals, festivals, live entertainment, and haunted house attractions.
  • Door-to-door trick or treating.
  • "Trunk or Treat" events.

Dallas County experts are recommending other activities for having fun and enjoying Halloween while protecting your health, including:

  • Online parties/contests.
  • Car parades - individuals in vehicles should be within households.
  • Halloween movie nights - at home or drive-in theaters.
  • Halloween-themed meals.
  • Dressing up homes or yards with Halloween-themed decorations.
  • Scavenger hunt-style candy searches around your home or yard.

If you do go out for Halloween, please remember to wear a mask that covers your nose and mouth, keep your distance and remain at least six feet away from others, wash your hands frequently with either soap and water or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer, and get your flu shot two weeks before Halloween to make sure you are protected.
