WHAT'S SPLASHING ?
Burlington County Special Services School District
June 2015
Since it is the end of the school year students were assessed on their swim skills learned and practiced during their class time throughout the school year. The progress in the stages of the skills that has been made is quite noticeable. Although students swim skills have improved there also has been improvement in areas such as self-esteem and confidence. It is awesome to see a student who would not try to float without a flotation device to gaining the confidence to swim using the "Tickle-T-Snap" technique on their back with flutter kicks with no flotation device. This means a student is learning how to propel themselves through the water on their back. Students are using the flutter kick the whole time while moving through a 3 part sequence with their arms. The first part is the recovery phase where the student's arms are right underneath their armpit. The student then moves into the second part where their arms are stretched out straight horizontally align with their shoulders. Students then move into the last phase which is the power phase where students snap their arms straight down to their side. The entire stroke is done with keeping their arms in the water.
As it is summer, students need to remember to be safe around the water and practice what they learned throughout the year. Tips to remember are:
1. To always swim with a buddy.
2. Apply sunscreen at least 30 minutes before going in the sun and right after getting out of the water.
3. "Water Wings" or "Swimmies" is not a Coast Guard approved device.
I would just like to thank the students for all their hard work through out the year. I would also like to thank the staff, the YMCA and The supervisor of Aquatics for all their help with aquatics class to make it safe and successful. I look forward to another fun and productive year of aquatics class. Have a great summer!
