Lower Campus Closure
Friday, November 4, 2022
Dear GLOBE community,
This Friday, November 4, our Lower Campus facility will be closed. We recognize that this is an interruption to our students and a significant inconvenience to you — but we have to make a critical plumbing repair to protect the health and safety of our students and staff.
We discovered that the pipes under the boys’ bathroom are deteriorating, and while we hoped to be able to fix them without impacting students, teachers, or parents, that unfortunately is not feasible. The repair will be a three-day job — and one that has to begin as soon as the necessary components arrive this week.
On Thursday, you will receive detailed instructions from your Lower Campus students’ teachers, outlining the learning plan for Friday. (Upper Campus will operate normally.)
As you know, the plumbing is just the latest in a series of parts and pieces that are nearing the end of their useful life at Lower Campus. We’d like to take this opportunity to provide updates on a few of the others.
Fire Alarms: Earlier this school year, we discovered that our fire alarm system was impaired, and at the Board of Directors meeting in September, the board approved $160K to be spent on a new system.
Since that approval, GLOBE has secured a contract for the new system and ordered all the necessary equipment. While we wait for parts and permitting to come in — a wait we knew we’d have to contend with — we have maintained 24-hour fire watch, in accordance with the orders of the DeKalb County Fire Marshal. With this fire watch, a designated individual is on the lookout for smoke or fires around the clock and contacts emergency personnel at the first sign of anything.
Indoor Air Quality: Our operations team is also working diligently with a suite of vendors to monitor our facilities and protect the health and safety of our staff and students. Among other things, this involves continuing to monitor our indoor air quality. Just as we shared at the start of the year, we have industrial-grade dehumidifiers running around the building, and these dehumidifiers are being regularly serviced and responsibly maintained.
Humidity levels have been standard.
In accordance with the recommendations of Hibernia Environmental, we will continue to clean our vents and do air scrubbing at regular intervals. We performed this remediation work in August, and the next phase of it is scheduled for late December, during winter break. We also conducted indoor air quality testing in August, and all results were normal; we will do this testing again in December.
High-Touch Surfaces: While I’m providing an update on health and safety, I’d be remiss not to acknowledge the start of cold and flu season. At this time of year, our custodial team is conducting more frequent deep cleaning of all high-touch surfaces. We encourage you to remind your students about frequent hand-washing — and to keep them home if they have symptoms.
We know this big update may prompt some follow-up questions. Here’s how to get answers:
For facilities-related questions, contact Director of Operations Cortney Flowers.
For health-related questions, contact Dr. Reese (LC) or Nurse Robinson (UC).
For questions about Friday’s learning, contact your student’s teachers. (Please give them a day or two to prepare, as this is news to everyone!)
If you’re not sure who to ask your question, or you can’t seem to get the information you need, please just respond to this email, and we’ll be happy to help.
We know these facilities problems are painful, and we know that patches like this Friday’s plumbing repair are disruptive. That is just one reason why our Master Facilities Planning is continuing at full speed. We are all incredibly eager to have a permanent home for GLOBE, and we will keep you updated on our progress.
In community,
Christi Elliott-Earby
