The teachers say...

We are well on our way to finishing our gifts for the students of Villa Esperanza! We have made crayons, designed coloring books, made 3-D letters and weighted blankets. A special thank you to Mrs. Ryan, Olivia's grandmother, and our student sewers Zoe, Maddie, Nico and Catie P. for all of their hard work at the sewing machines.

Important Dates:

Monday, May 2 - 4S in charge of morning prayers

Wednesday, May 4- Topic 12 Math Test

Thursday, May 5- science test on magnets

Thursday, May 5- personal safety assembly

Friday, May 27- California Travel Journals due

May 31-June 3- Social Studies Creative Project presentations

Math: We will be having a math test this week on adding and subtracting mixed numbers and simplifying. Then we will continue with fractions, including how they relate to decimals.

English: This week our grammar focus will be on negatives and making contractions with the word not. Our writing lessons will center around planning a research report, as we will coordinate with Ms. Gandara and the social studies project next week.

Science: There will be a test this Thursday, 5/5, on magnets. A study guide went home on April 28. We will be working on presentations of the research projects to the third grade. Students will create trading cards based on their creature, and design a short presentation as a research team.

Reading: We are almost halfway through Island of the Blue Dolphins. Our main character, Karana, is now alone on the island. She faces a pack of wild dogs that have already killed her little brother. Who said children's novels were boring?!

Social Studies: It's time for California History Projects! Over the next few weeks, your child will be writing a travel journal, creating a personal project, and designing and printing a 3D souvenir in the technology lab. A packet is going home TODAY for you to read and sign. Please help your child make his/her selections for historical landmark, mission, and tourist attraction for homework tonight. The packet contains an extensive overview of the project--please take the time to go over it tonight with your child.

Spelling/Writing: Lesson 23 words; test on Friday, May 6.. You can find a printable copy of the list on the 4th grade page of the MJS website.
