Jean Louise (Scout) Finch
Ruhi Deshmukh- 6th period
Symbol- Overalls
A symbol that represents Scout is overalls. Overalls are a good symbol for her because she is very tomboyish and active. Her personality is shown throughout the book and especially when she says "'I was usually mud-splashed or covered with sand.'" (Lee 176) There is also a direct reference to her overalls when Mrs. Dubose criticizes her wardrobe preferences. "'What are you doing in those overalls? You should be in a dress and camisole young lady.'" (Lee 135). Therefore overalls are the best fitting symbol to represent Scout.
Character Traits
Two character traits to describe Scout are tomboy and intelligent. Her tomboyish personality is expressed in her actions as well as her words. She would rather play with Jem and Dill instead of sitting in a dress and having tea parties. She thinks of being girly as a foreign concept. This is exhibited when she narrates "'...by watching her I began to think there was some skill involved in being a girl'"(Lee 154). Her personality begins to upset Aunt Alexandra and she says "'We decided that it would be best for you to have some feminine influence." (Lee 170). She has another quality that is dominant in the story. This trait is intelligence. She couldn't wait for school which shows a desire to learn. "I would be starting school in a week. I never looked forward to anything more in my life." (Lee 20) She recalls that she "...could not remember not being able to read hymns." (Lee 23) and that "reading was just something that came to me." (Lee 23). These traits are exhibited throughout the book and are they are her most dominant traits.
Color Representation
Red is a good color to represent Scout because the color red expresses someone who is active and is best when taking action. Red represents some who is bold and courageous, but is easily angered and vulnerable in stressful situations. This is a good example of Scout because she gets angry easily which results in her getting in a lot of fights. "...I split my knuckle to the bone on his front teeth. My left impaired, I sailed in with my right..." (Lee 112). This shows how red is a good representation of her personality.
