Freewriting and Idea Generation
1. What do I Write About? Where do I Get My Ideas?
You protagonist (main character) has to start at Point A with a goal of achieving something (Point Z), and there has to be a conflict, some force that is hindering his ability to reach his goal.
All of your planning must revolve around those to elements.
2. Freewriting: A Way to Generate Ideas
•Write about anything
–Observations about the prompt
–Stories inspired by the prompt
–Something the prompt reminds you of
•Don’t worry about whether it’s good or not; we’re just getting ideas.
•If you get stuck, feel free to start writing about something else.
•Above all, just keep writing!

5. Freewriting With Quotes Set One
Open your Google Doc and take ten minutes and write a "story" (You don't have to finish.) that begins with one of these lines.
•The mighty Yung-lo sat on the great throne surrounded by a hundred attendants. He was sad, for he could think of no wonderful thing to do for his country.
•I had the story, bit by bit, from various people, and, as generally happens in such cases, each time it was a different story.
•I was sitting on the deck of a Savannah steam-ship, which was lying at a dock in the East River, New York. I was waiting for young Ralph and had already waited some time; which surprised me, because Ralph was, as a general thing, a very prompt fellow, who seldom kept people waiting.
6. Freewriting with Quotes Set Two
•In the real world, beasts didn't turn into men. Instead, it was the other way around.
•Sometimes, when you look more closely at your enemies, they start looking less like enemies.
•It is better to die honorably and render yourself immortal than live to old age and fade to dust.
7. Write a Story Inspired by a Piece of Music
For now, here are five full selections of mostly classical music. Choose one to write about while it plays in the background.
8. More Sources for Ideas
•For example:
–What would Hunger Games be like if the contest was an eating contest and Katniss was a talking dog?
–What would The Little Mermaid be like if it took place in a modern high school and Ursula is an evil gym teacher?
Take your favorite secondary character from a story and write it from their point of view or send them on their own adventure.
