Counseling Lessons - What Have We Been Working On?
Welcome and thanks for checking out what your students are learning during my bi-weekly classroom visits! We have been hard at work defining traits of a good learner and true friend. Check out the blurbs below to see what we are working on in each building :)
Elementary
September
- We began the school year by doing activities to get to know one another.
- We were introduced/continued working with our Second Step curriculum, focusing this month on skills needed to be a good learner. We discussed FOCUSING our attention, LISTENING to the speaker, and being ASSERTIVE when we speak.
- We read stories that focused on self confidence, friendship and respect
October
- October is National Bullying Prevention Month. We read books and did activities that focused around the idea of being a good friend and using empathy when talking and working with others.
- We discussed the difference between being rude and mean.
- We talked about how students can handle rude or mean moments themselves and also discussed when would be a good time to involve an adult.
- We talked about what the definition of a true bully is: Bullying is unwanted, aggressive behavior among student and adults that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. The behavior is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time. It is NOT a one time or even a two time event.
- Our 4th grade class has been busy creating a new design for our buddy bench... keep a look out for our final product!
Intermediate
September
- We began the school year by doing activities to get to know one another.
- We continued working with our Second Step curriculum, focusing this month on skills needed to be a good learner. We discussed FOCUSING our attention, LISTENING to the speaker, using SELF TALK to talk through a situation before we say it out loud, and being ASSERTIVE when we speak.
- We defined EMPATHY (the ability to understand and share the feelings of another), discussed it's importance and practiced situations where we would use it.

The video below was one I used during one of our 8th grade lessons regarding bullying and perspective. If you have time to watch it again with your 8th grader, I highly recommend! We had some GREAT discussion and I am sure your students would love to share their thoughts with you.

As always, please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or concerns that you would like me to discuss with you or your child. It is easiest to contact me via email as I travel between the elementary and intermediate school buildings. My email is jsarnow@hnrschools.org. I do have an HNR webpage as well with helpful information and links that support the topics we are covering in our social/emotional learning classes!
