The Serene Scoop
Serene Hills Elementary School --- Sept. 30, 2022
Message from the Principal:
What an exciting week! We started off with an Apex assembly and Apex has been filling our school with joy and character building lessons all week. We are up to $1,608 an obstacle! Outstanding! All the money we raise goes to our PTO who, in turn, blesses our school. So, thank you, thank you. Next Thursday, we hope you will join us for our FUN RUN Obstacle Course during your student's specials time.

Enrichment Classes - If you registered your students for an after-school enrichment class through Community Programs, then classes begin next week. Please remember you must change their dismissal in SmartTag for every day that they are attending a class.
Birthday Cupcakes - Birthdays are not celebrated in the classroom with food. On a student’s birthday, the student will receive a birthday coupon for a treat intended to be redeemed in the cafeteria. Parents, grandparents and family members are welcome to join their child for lunch, but lunch or treats may not be provided to other children outside of that household. For students whose birthdays occur on a non-instructional day, they will receive/redeem their coupon on another instructional day.
I hope you all have a great weekend with your families.
Warmly,
Keegan Luedecke
SHE Principal

Next Week in Second Step:
This month, our schoolwide theme is skills for learning: listening, focusing attention, using self-talk to stay on-task, and being assertive when asking for help with a learning task. In our morning announcements and school assembly, we’ll be reminding students of these skills, which help students be successful learners.
Please tell your child’s teacher if you’d like more suggestions about supporting skills for learning at home.
Ms. Hall's Class Visited the Science Lab!
Dinner Table Conversation Starters:
- What do you want to be when you grow up? Why?
- What’s your favorite movie? Why?
- If we could go anywhere you wanted on vacation, where would you choose? Why?
- If you could have a conversation with anyone in history, who would it be? What would you want to ask them?
- If your best friend could be anyone from a book you have read, who would it be?

P.E. Mile Run
Students will be having their first Mile Run in PE classes on October 3rd and 4th. We will run the mile run 4 times this year (once every 9 weeks). The top two male and female finish times per grade level will qualify for our End of the Year Mile Race Off. However, we place the main emphasis on personal records and goal setting. Students will keep a Mile Run sheet in their binder with their time and goal. Feel free to use this as a tool to refer to at home and discuss perseverance and grit.
Feel free to come out and cheer your kids on!
Child ID Fingerprint Kits are being distributed to all students in grades K-8 in the State of Texas.
The National Child ID Program was passed in this last legislative session under Senate Bill 2158 (Child ID Kits for Safe Recovery Act). This program provides parents with children in grades K-8th inkless I.D. kits for safekeeping in case of an emergency. The kits are voluntary, kept at home (so the information is not stored in a central database unless it is submitted by the parents), and may be turned into law enforcement in an effort to locate their missing child. The hope is the kits will never have to be used, but if an emergency occurs, information from the kit could directly lead to the safe recovery of a missing child. This is an at home fingerprint kit and it is to be done and stored at home. All of the information and instructions are on the kit. Look for these kits to come home next week!

DISCOVERY/GIFTED AND TALENTED PROGRAM: PARENT REFERRAL INFORMATION - DEADLINE 10/21
The Discovery Program, otherwise known as Gifted and Talented, is now accepting parent referrals for GT Screening via this google form.
Transfer students, who were already identified as GT coming from their previous district, should submit their google form as soon as possible, as the transfer student screening will be set within 30 days of the first day of school. Parents should send proof of their child's selection/participation in the previous GT program directly to the campus GT coordinator.
Parents can submit referrals for screening up until the end of the first 9 weeks, by October 21, 2022. Students will be tested during the 2nd 9 weeks of instruction. If the referral and permission forms are not submitted by the deadline, the student will have to wait until the next year's screening opportunity, as the spring screening session is only for students moving in new to the district after the fall testing window is closed.
The forms and further information about the program can be found here.
Once the request is submitted through the google form, the campus GT coordinator will contact parents via email when the testing dates are set and share additional information. Please plan to attend the Elementary GT Parent Night (virtual event) on October 14 at 11:30 AM for an informative presentation about the program along with a Q&A session with your campus GT teacher.
You are also welcome to contact your campus GT coordinator directly, at any time, with questions. Please reference the contact information below:
