Mrs. Karen Parmer: Title I Program Director and Reading Recovery Teacher
The Southwestern School Corporation has been home to Mrs. Karen Parmer all her life. Mrs. Parmer attended Mt. Auburn Grade School and graduated from Southwestern High School. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Butler University, a master’s degree from Indiana University, and completed Reading Recovery training from Purdue University. Mrs. Parmer was hired in 1979 as a fifth grade teacher and subsequently taught kindergarten and first grade. She went on to teach third grade for an additional seventeen years. Since 2002, Mrs. Parmer has served as the corporation Title I program director and Reading Recovery teacher. Additionally, she taught a reading methods course for six years as an adjunct faculty member in the College of Education at IUPUC. Mrs. Parmer and her Southwestern alumni husband, Jerry, have two daughters, Kristen and Laura, who both graduated from Southwestern High School. She is honored to work with such a professional and caring staff who always put students first. Thank you, Mrs. Parmer, for all that you do for our Spartans!

April is Defeat Diabetes Month
Diabetes is a condition in which the body does not properly process food for use as energy. Most of the food we eat is turned into glucose, or sugar, for our bodies to use for energy. When a person has diabetes, the body either doesn't make enough insulin or cannot use its own insulin as well as it should. This causes sugars to build up in the blood.
Type 1 diabetes is usually diagnosed in children and young adults, and was previously known as juvenile diabetes. When the body does not use insulin properly it is known as type 2 diabetes. 1 in 11 Americans have diabetes. It is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States. Approximately 1.25 million American children and adults have type 1 diabetes.
There are several ways to defeat diabetes:
- Staying at a healthy weight can help you prevent and manage problems like pre-diabetes, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and unhealthy cholesterol.
- Physical activity is important in controlling blood sugar.
- Slowly change your diet replacing pop with tea or water and replacing high fat items with lower fat alternatives. Add more vegetables and fruits to your diet. Drink at least 8 glasses of water (just water with no sugar or powder added) per day.
