Van Brunt Elementary

September 2015

WELCOME TO THE 2015-2016 SCHOOL YEAR!

Dear Van Brunt Families,

It was wonderful to see so many of you at open house. Students had the opportunity to organize their desks, practice opening their lockers, meet their teachers, and catch up with friends. It's always exciting to welcome our new and returning families to a new school year at Van Brunt Elementary!

Students have enjoyed getting to know their teachers and classmates. They have reviewed the school expectations and had opportunities to practice those expectations. Great books are being read and new math concepts are being learned. There is so much going on during these first weeks of school!

As always, please don't hesitate to contact me or your child's teacher if you have any questions, comments, or concerns. We are looking forward to a wonderful year!

CONGRATULATIONS!

We are so proud of the students and staff of Van Brunt for being recognized as a PBIS School of Merit! Everyone has been working very hard to learn and follow the expectations at Van Brunt. Staff members all work together to encourage and help students practice appropriate behavior and students work hard to follow those expectations! We are looking forward to another great PBIS year!

HEALTHY EATING

According to the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction: "Nutrition education and the promotion of healthy eating behaviors and lifestyles are essential to students' health, well being, and educational success. Healthy, well-nourished students are better able to reach their full academic and physical potential, are absent less often, and have higher test scores. Through education, Wisconsin students can become empowered to choose healthy lifestyle behaviors to help them excel in all their endeavors."

At Van Brunt, we would like to encourage our students to bring healthy snacks and lunches to school. This is the time to refuel our bodies and brains.

Some ideas include:

  • Fresh/dried fruit and vegetables
  • Whole grain crackers
  • Rice cakes
  • Popcorn (air popped)
  • Granola or cereal bars
  • Yogurt
  • Cheese
  • Nuts (please check with your child's teacher before bringing nuts)
  • Trail mix
  • 100% fruit juice

Please avoid sending soda with your child. When students drink soda during the school day, healthy foods are often displaced from their diet. If there is a special event in your child's classroom, and soda is allowed, your child's teacher will send a note.
