Volume 7: The Culmination

The academic and career planning process officially begins when students enter 6th grade and concludes when students graduate from high school ready to take the next step in their self-defined career pathway, whether that be college, military, or directly into their career.

In volume 7 of the SASD ACP newsletter, we highlight two end of the year events, the Inspire to Hire Job Fair and Senior Signing Day. We also provide a closer examination of the role of labor market data and share an update on the growth of Inspire Sheboygan County.

The Sheboygan Area School District celebrated the graduating class of 2019 with our first annual 'Senior Signing Day’ on Thursday, May 30. Senior Signing Day is designed to recognize our seniors and their next steps in college and career. High school graduates were joined by universities, technical colleges, military representatives, and area employers.

North High School celebrated 229 graduating seniors who have selected a total of 67 different post-secondary options. Of the students recognized at North High 10 will be going into the military, 13 have been hired full-time by local employers, 44 will be attending a technical college, and 162 will be attending a 4-year college or university.

South High School celebrated 143 graduating seniors who have selected a total of 37 different post-secondary options. Of the students recognized at South High 8 will be going into the military, 6 have been hired full-time by local employers, 43 will be attending a technical college, and 86 will be attending a 4-year college or university.

One of the goals of the Sheboygan Area School District’s long-range plan is to ensure, upon graduation, all students will be prepared to successfully take the next step in their self-defined career pathway. Through the Academic and Career Planning process, which begins in sixth grade, students and their families are equipped with the tools necessary to make more informed choices about college and training options that lead to careers.

Sam Dekker and Olivia Harlan Dekker were special guest emcees.

The Value in Labor Market Data

If the idea behind academic and career planning is for students to be equipped to make informed decisions about their plans after high school, then understanding labor market trends is an important slice of the pie. I often tell students that they shouldn't necessarily follow a career path, nor should they give up on their plans solely on the grounds that employment projections are positive or negative. However, students should know if career opportunities will be relatively more abundant in certain areas while in other areas, opportunities are scarce.

Two reliable resources that families can access for more information include:

  1. The Bureau of Labor Statistics
  2. State of Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development
