June School News
June 12, 2021
Hello APB Families,
Congratulations on finishing the school year! Please join me in celebrating the achievements and bright futures of our Class of 2021 graduates. We had a wonderful in-person graduation ceremony for our seniors. Video of the event, including the great speeches by 4 of our graduating seniors, is available on our Facebook page.
As we prepare for summer break, I want to take a moment to share some exciting school updates for this summer and the 2021 fall semester. You can expect additional updates by mail and messages sent via Remind. You can also stay connected with us on Facebook and Instagram.
First Day of School
Our educators and staff have already begun planning the fall 2021 school year. We are looking forward to reopening our school with full, in-person instruction five days a week beginning on Wednesday, August 11, 2021.
The school day will begin at 8:30 am next year. We will release the full bell schedule later this month.
If you have any questions about our reopening plans, visit our website at https://ca.greendot.org/reopeningplans/.
Returning to School Survey
As we plan for the new school, we want to confirm with every student that they will be returning to APB in the fall. We hope that you plan to join us next year, but we understand some families moved out of Los Angeles during this school year and may not attend APB next year. Please take two minutes to complete this survey to let us know if you will be returning to APB next year.
Student Technology
Students who checked out a Chromebook or internet hotspot for Distance Learning may keep those materials at home for the next school year. Students only need to return technology at the end of their 12th grade year or if they withdraw from the school.
New School Dress Code
APB has updated its dress code for students for the new school year to allow for more student choice and variety while also ensuring that the school environment remains safe, orderly, and focused on academics:

Summer Office Hours
This week, APB's main office will be open on Monday and Tuesday from 8 am - 3:30 pm.
The office will be closed June 16-June 30.
APB's main office will reopen July 1, the first day of Extended Semester and Summer School. During the month of July, the office will be open from 8:30 am - 2 pm each day.
Summer Programming
Beginning in July, we are excited to provide free academic support and extracurricular activities to all of our students.
- Summer Extended Semester: High School students can use this opportunity to complete any assignments or courses they were unable to finalize or pass during the school year. Our academic teams will contact you directly to confirm if your child is eligible for the summer extended semester.
- Summer Bridge: All incoming 9th grade students are expected to attend Summer Bridge. An invitation will be sent out to you via USPS mail with the dates your child will attend. Summer Bridge will be from July 19-30 from 9am-12pm. Cohort 1 will attend the week of July 19-23 and Cohort 2 will attend July 26-30. To receive information about Summer Bridge, text @apb2025 to 81010.
- Expanded Learning: We are hosting a series of summer activities virtually and in-person this summer, including special day camps during the week. All in-person activities held on our campus will follow the health and safety guidelines provided by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health. To learn more about how your child can participate in our free expanded learning activity, email expandedlearning@greendot.org.
Grading Policy Update
The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the grades and coursework of many of our students. To accommodate this, we have made a few adjustments to our grading policy so we can properly reflect the achievements our students have made during this difficult transition, and provide opportunities for students to make up grades.
Report cards with end of semester grades will be mailed to families this week.
We will continue to provide opportunities for students to make up 2020-21 grades during this summer. Students who have received an “F” grade at the end of the semester will receive an “Incomplete” mark on their Spring 2021 final report card. Students will have the opportunity to raise their grade to a “C” grade through our Extended Semester program. We will contact the parents and guardians of all eligible students for this program.
In addition, students will receive an A, B, or Incomplete on their Spring 2021 report card. A “Pass” will replace a “C” or “D” mark on the report card. We have aligned this policy with college guidelines, and the University of California and California State University systems will accept a “Pass” grade for the 2020-21 school year.
Free vaccine clinic at APB:
APB is hosting its fourth COVID vaccine (Pfizer) clinic for the Florence Firestone community on Wednesday, June 30. Anyone 12+ is eligible to receive the vaccine for free at APB. No appointment is necessary. The clinic is open from 8:00 am - 3:30 pm. For students who are 12-17, a guardian must accompany them, or a guardian can provide written consent for their child to receive the vaccine. Consent forms are available in the main office or at this link.
If you have any questions about any of these announcements, feel free to call the school at 323-585-3312 or email me at brian.thomas-reed@animo.org.
I look forward to continuing to work with each of you as we ensure all APB students graduate prepared for college, leadership, and life.
