We have completed our study of where writers get their ideas and ways to use their writer's notebooks. We will spend this week beginning our study of narrative writing. Today we did a lesson and practiced using character traits. We will spend the rest of the week studying mentor texts of narrative writing to help us know how writers use small moments in life to create a story.
Indiana History
We are finished with our interactive maps and they look great! They took a couple days longer to complete than I had planned, so you may have noticed that the quiz over map skills will now be Wednesday, 9/9. Look for the maps to come home tomorrow so students can use them to begin preparing. Their quiz will include identification of the terms on the map, along with relative location and finding location using lines of latitude and longitude. We will be practicing relative location and lines of latitude and longitude this week.
Wordly Wise
We began the second lesson of Wordly Wise today. We will take the test over this lesson next Friday, 9/11. Students will be responsible for completing sections 2A and 2B by Friday.
Science
We will be wrapping up our study of the scientific method this week. We will spend early next week reviewing for the test and will take the test on Thursday, 9/10. Today, we were able to play Quiz, Quiz, Trade to review the terms we have learned so far.
Math
We are almost done with our first unit in math and will take the test this Friday, 9/4. Study guides will come home tomorrow and will be due on Thursday. For the test, students will need to know:
- How to draw a polygon when given specific features (i.e. Draw a quadrangle that has 4 right angles and is not a square).
- How to draw lines, rays, and line segments.
- How to draw parallel and intersecting lines.
- How to correctly name geometric figures.
- How to identify polygons and explain why a shape is not a polygon.
- Addition and subtraction facts and extended facts (i.e. 4 + 8 = 12, 40 + 80 = 120).
Spelling
We will begin spelling this week, using the Words Their Way curriculum. Students will all have the same list from now until Camp Tecumseh. We will use these weeks to establish routines and expectations for spelling. After we return from Camp Tecumseh, students will be working in differentiated groups based upon a pretest they took at the beginning of the year.

Technology
- Sign up to monitor your child's Khan Academy account. You can do this by having your child log into http://www.khanacademy.org. Their username and password should be written in their planners. Then click on the "coaches" tab and fill in your address under "Add Your Parent." We will be using this throughout the year. I will be recommending sessions each chapter that serve as a great review for topics we are currently working on in class. I have encouraged students to begin with these topics before working on others.
- Sign up for our classroom Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/groups/sgeknueven/. I use this page to post pictures of classroom activities and reminders.
- Sign up to be an observer on our classroom Canvas page. Go to: https://zcs.instructure.com/login/ldap. Click on the "Parent of a Canvas User?" tab to create your account.

Immunization Requirements
State law stipulates that the medical records of children on file at school show the required immunizations have been completed by the 20th day of the school year. For the 2015-2016 school year that day is September 8, 2015.
If parents object to immunizations, an objection must be on file in the school office by September 8. Children who do not have up–to-date vaccination records by that date will not be allowed to return to school until the proper immunization information is on file. Students who have appointments with their health care provider after September 8 may present proof of that appointment in order to stay in school.
Parents of children whose immunizations are not up-to-date should contact their personal or family health care provider or the Boone County Health Department to schedule an appointment for the necessary immunizations. Some pharmacies also may carry the necessary vaccines.
If you have any questions or need clarification of which immunizations are missing, please contact Hailey Twitty, School Health Care Professional, at 317-873-8050 x 19993. Thank you!
