Boone Meadow Flyer
Summer Update Edition From Boone Meadow Elementary School
Dear Boone Meadow Families-
The summer days are flying by, and with that, preparations for the new school year are well underway. Although children aren't currently filling the learning spaces, the schoolhouse has been extremely busy with various projects since the last day with students. Throughout the summer, a majority of our teachers participated in professional development during the months of June and July, and they are strategically integrating their new learning as they begin their instructional designs. I admire this team of educators as they are always looking for ways to become stronger and elevate their practice as educators in order to serve you and your children more completely.
In addition, as we draw near to the start of school, here are a few items to keep in mind:
- Office will reopen to the public on July 29th. Office staff is working to prepare for the upcoming school year, and you are always welcome to call if needed.
- New Family Night – This coming Monday Evening, July 29th. (5:45-6:30) If you are new to Boone Meadow, did not attend Kindergarten Round-up, and/or haven’t been in the building, please mark your calendar on Monday evening, July 29th for an orientation to Boone Meadow. This is for newly enrolled families. We will meet in the cafeteria at 5:45 for a brief information session. (doors open at 5:30)
- August 1st & 2nd - All teachers will return to work and will be engaged in professional development across the district both days. On Monday, August 5th, they will be working in their classrooms and meeting with colleagues in order to finalize plans and preparations for the start of school.
- Class assignment notification - Late afternoon on August 2nd, families should receive an email from ZCS notifying families of their elementary child's classroom placement for the upcoming school year.
- Open House/Meet and Greet – On Monday evening, August 5th, (5:00-6:30) the school is open for all families in order to reconnect with classmates and visit your classroom. During this time, students can drop off school supplies, say hello to their teacher, and get those last few questions answered. We conclude the evening at 6:30 in order to be well-prepared and well-rested for our first day of school on Wednesday, August 7th.
- NEW STAFF - I am pleased to introduce some of our new staff in this edition of our "Friday Flyer." Truly, we have added some great talent to our team. We've included brief bios and photos below.
Enjoy your weekend!
Sincerely,
Tom Hundley, Principal
Welcome to the Boone Meadow Family
Emma Bleakman - 3rd Grade
Hello BME Families,
My name is Emma Bleakman, and I am so excited to be joining the Boone Meadow Team.
I recently graduated from Purdue University with a major in Elementary Education with a concentration in Reading and a minor in Global Studies. During my time at Purdue, I had the opportunity to teach in Haiti, Honduras, Austria, Germany, and Lafayette. Though my passion of teaching has taken me around the world, there is no better place for me than right where I started, here in Zionsville Schools.
I was born in England and moved to the United States as a baby. Although my family is scattered around the world, I am grateful to live in a community like Zionsville, where friends become family. Sunshine, playing cards, running, and a cup of tea are a few of my favorite things. I am looking forward to meeting all of you!
Emma Bleakman
Cindy Hamlow - 3rd Grade
Hi, Everyone! I'm Cindi Hamlow, and I am so excited to be joining the staff at Boone Meadow Elementary!
I live in Zionsville with my husband, Ben, and our 4 sons, Josh (17), Camden (15), Kasen (12), and Kian (10). Originally, from Southern California I love the beach, the mountains, and of course, Mexican food. In California, I worked in the legal field for a motion picture studio, a career that was fun and had some awesome perks. In 2007 our family relocated to Indiana, and I went back to school to earn my teaching degree. I began teaching in 2010 and learned what it is to have complete joy in a career. I am so blessed to have been called to work with kids! I am passionate about teaching global awareness, social emotional skills, and helping kids figure out just how powerful they are. In 2016 my husband and I, along with our older boys, took a mission trip to Kenya to take school children there on their first field trip ever, a visit to an elephant orphanage. Talk about a teacher's dream come true!
When I'm not teaching, you will usually find me on a ball field. All of my boys play baseball and it keeps us busy year round. We also enjoy spending time together at church, going to zoos, watching movies, and eating ice cream. We have a humble little life, but man, is it good!

Kerrie Hodges - Instructional Assistant
Ehrin Howe - Media Center
I am super excited to be joining the BME staff! My husband, Chris, & I moved our family to Zionsville in the summer of 2013, & our two oldest started at BME when it opened that fall. Grace was a third grader at the time & Owen a kindergartener. It’s crazy to think that Grace will now be a freshman at ZCHS & Owen a 6th grader at ZWMS! Our youngest son, Seth, will be in 1st grade here at BME.
My background is actually in school counseling so I’m really looking forward to getting back into the school setting. I have worked with kids for most of my life in one capacity or another & am thrilled to be able to combine those experiences with my love of books in my new role in the media center.

MacKenzie Orbaugh - Kindergarten
Hello, Everyone. My name is MacKenzie Orbaugh, and I feel so honored to be joining the kindergarten team at Boone Meadow.
Zionsville Schools have a special place in my heart since I grew up attending here K-12. It is such a gift to be back. In May, I graduated from Butler University with a major in elementary education and minors in early childhood, as well as, mild intervention (special education). I am a lifelong learner and am currently taking classes at Butler University to receive an Applied Educational Neuroscience certificate. When I am not in school you can find me coaching the freshman cheerleading squad, doing anything outdoors, or trying to learn how to cook!
I am so blessed to be a part of this team and am excited for the year ahead.

Volunteers and Visitor Background Checks
CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECKS FOR VOLUNTEERS
We value partnerships with our families and welcome parents and guardians to serve as volunteers in our schools. Each ZCS building offers a wide variety of volunteer opportunities.
Examples include:
- Field Trip Chaperones
- Out of Town/Overnight Chaperones
- Tutors
- Volunteer Coaches
- Classroom Helpers (PTO parties/room parents)
- Library Helpers
- After Prom Workers
- Field Day/Jog-A-Thon Volunteers
- Book Fair Sales/Athletic Ticket Sales
During the school day, all volunteers are expected to sign in at the front office. Prior to the volunteer opportunity, all volunteers must sign a Non-disclosure Acknowledgement Form and have successfully completed a Full Criminal History Background Check. Necessary background check paperwork is available on the ZCS website at the Volunteers/BRAVO link and should be submitted at least 10 days prior to the intended volunteer date. Volunteers must also view the state mandated confidentiality/bullying video, provided on the Volunteer/BRAVO website. The volunteer will pay the fee* for the full background check which will expire after 5 years. The link to apply for the full background check can be accessed on the Volunteers/BRAVO link on the ZCS main webpage. For more information, contact the Volunteer/BRAVO Coordinator.
CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECKS FOR VISITORS
During the school day, all visitors must enter via the front door and sign-in at the front office. Visitors need to be prepared to present a government issued photo ID which will be scanned against the National Sex Offender Registry. All visitors will be issued a visitor badge/tag to be worn inside the building at all times.
Examples Include:
- Lunch Guests
- Classroom Guest Speakers
- Classroom Special Events (Grandparent Day/Famous Hoosiers/etc.)
- Parent/Teacher Conferences
We ask that all visitors schedule an appointment to meet with teachers, counselors, administrators and all other staff members so that we may best serve everyone. Visitors other than parents/guardians must be prearranged and organized through the main office.
*ZCS thanks all volunteers for generous support of our youth and schools. Thank you, too, for supporting assurance of student and staff safety by completing and paying for a volunteer background check.
