What did you do after graduation?
After graduation I worked at Tim Horton's to buffer my savings account before starting my BFA in Musical Theatre at Fredonia that August (2008).
What is your current career?
Last year, I made the majority of my income through Nevertold Productions, a theatre company for which I perform. We have an Irish/maritime band, and a full length pirate themed half improvised musical complete with sword fighting. It's a lot of silly fun. However, like all NYC actors, I have to work day jobs as well. I work as a cater waiter and baby sitter, and I have taken all kinds of work: I have fetched props for Playwrights Horizons, I have been a Mascot Wrangler -the list goes on and on (and odd!). If it pays well, I'll try it out!
Check out and follow Nevertold Production Company on Facebook! https://www.facebook.com/greatestpiratestory/
How did participation in Drama Club affect your career path?
NHS drama taught me to have confidence in my work. The love and passion were there the second I stepped on the stage, but I was never an overly confident person, and struggled with wanting/fearing the limelight. Since that time, I have learned to focus on improving a craft, remembering to feel deserving but always GRATEFUL for every opportunity I'm given.
What is some advice for NHS students wanting to pursue a career or life in the arts?
Don't!! I kid. Don't, unless you are a VERY HARD WORKER. I mean, you have to enjoy and revel in the hustle. The arts career means struggle and reward. There will be VERY early mornings, VERY late nights, and lots of serving fancy wealthy people on your feet for 13 hours (I did that yesterday and ran into fellow alum Mark Chamberlain selling wine at an event here!! What are the chances). When you get a show, and you get to belt your face off and make people laugh....there's no greater feeling in the world. But you have to be humble and take passionless, difficult work - that feeling costs you a lot of time, money, and effort. But to me, it's worth it.
Thank you, Claire! NHS is proud to have alum working in the theatre arts!
