Not One but TWO Golden Apples!

We were excited to have WHO 13 and IMT Insurance present two Golden Apple awards to Mrs. Hazel Bogaard and Mr. Jerod Garland. It was the first time in 25 years they’ve had two winners from the same school. Both were honored to receive this award in front of the students who had nominated them.

Jodi Long, WHO 13 news anchor pictured below, said this was the best Golden Apple presentation she’d ever been a part of, because we have such tremendous students who can speak from their hearts and share why these teachers have meant so much to them.

The full story will be coming out Thursday, February 3, so stay tuned. In the meantime, please help us in congratulating Hazel and Jerod if you see them or want to email them.

What should I do if my student tested positive for or was exposed to CoVid?

  • Positive student/staff:

    • May return after 5 full days if asymptomatic or symptoms are resolving (First day of symptoms or test if asymptomatic is day 0).

    • Mask REQUIRED at all times during the school day for an additional 5 days upon return.

    • Students will eat socially distanced during lunch for those 5 days as well, per Iowa Department of Public Health (Page 5 under CONTROLLING FURTHER SPREAD AND PREVENTING DISEASE). Once finished eating, the student may re-mask and join their classmates.

    • Parents do have the option of keeping their child home for 10 full days.

Outstanding Work by Lily!

Congratulations to Lily Duffy, winner of Achieve 3000 Make the Break winter holiday contest. Thousands of Iowa students competed in the contest, and Lily was selected as the state-wide winner! She was awarded a set of Skullcandy Sesh Evo headphones. Lily had worked hard over the holiday break to complete lessons in order to be considered. Great job, Lily!

8th Grade Mentors make an Impact at Jefferson

Pella Middle School and Jefferson Intermediate are partnering in a new mentor program. Eighth grade students have volunteered their time during study hall to support fourth grade students. They had a great first meeting with their buddies! They did a scavenger hunt at Jefferson and played with beads and UNO. We are so excited to see this program develop.

Why is my Stapler in JELL-O!

Why would 8th grade students put Mrs. Knight's stapler in JELL-O? If you are a fan of "The Office", you recognize the move as one of Jim's classic pranks on Dwight.

The class of 2024, led by Ava Curry and Anna Hackett, surprised Mrs. Knight on her birthday in January of 2020 by hiding her stapler in JELL-O, and they repeated the favor again this year by doing it again!. Mrs. Knight, an avid "The Office" fan, was touched by the girls' antics.

Pella Gear and Apparel Needed

Do you have any Pella gear or apparel that no longer fits or you'd like to get out of your closets? If so, Pella Middle School and Jefferson keep green and white on hand for new students, and we welcome any Pella gear and apparel that you would like to get rid of. It can be dropped off in our main offices. THANK YOU!

The Counselor Connection

New year, new goals! Each student reflected on the first semester and identified something they felt proud of. They also set new goals for the second semester. Ask your student what goals they are working towards and see how you can help support them!

Students in 8th grade wrapped up registering for their Freshman year. If you have questions about your student’s schedule for next year, please contact me @ jourdan.vanwyk@pellaschools.org

Students in 7th grade will be registering for their 8th grade classes after we return from spring break.

10th period Lead Time - Little Leaders Club

Mrs. Haley Bjustrom brought the Little Leaders Club to Madison Elementary to work with the elementary students, and I am unsure which group of students learned or appreciated it more!
