It’s disco week!

Please read the PTA section of the newsletter for more information.
Mid Year reports, ISA (year 4-6) and booking times for student led conferences.
The mid year reports were released online on Monday 29 January and the hard copy results (Years 4-6) of the International School Assessments (ISA) were sent home in your child’s diary on the same day. As a reminder, to locate your child’s report on Gateway once you have logged in, click on ARR Report (the button is located under your child's photo) and choose Mid Year Report 2017 - 2018
Student Led Conferences
Thursday 8th March (3:30pm-7:00pm)
or
Friday 9th March (during the school day - 8:30am-3:00pm) - School will not be open for lessons this day. (Please note different dates have been arranged for 2E - details will follow shortly)
The booking system for these sessions will open on Friday Feb 2nd and you will be notified by email. Please secure the most suitable time for your family as soon as you can. You will book a 15 minutes consultation time for your child and yourself to meet with the teacher but this is not all!
Please allow yourself at least 40 minutes per child so you can interact with them independently in other learning areas too. There will be a number of activities set up for you to engage in with your child and it will be great fun.
It’s important not to rush if you can free up some time.
The Student Led Conferences have become a highlight of our reporting processes for students and parents. This is an opportunity to be led, by your child, through their learning journey across all subjects and it allows you to see learning through their eyes. You will wish you were back at school again!
For Student Led Conferences (SLC) to work effectively it is important that all participants in the process know and clearly understand their role.
Students: SLC require children to think carefully about their learning. They will lead their parents and teacher through a discussion about what they have achieved, what has worked well for them and they will identify areas of challenge and next steps in their learning.
Teachers: The teacher’s role is to support the child through this process but not take over the conversation. The teacher will respond to student questions or interact where appropriate. It is important, however, to remember that the child is leading the conference. Clearly, student confidence and competence will vary from child to child and the teachers will ensure that the conference ‘flows’.
Parents: During SLC it is beneficial if parents support and encourage their child, praising both the samples of learning and the child’s efforts and attitude to learning. Throughout the process parents should feel free to ask questions that prompt their child to reflect and look realistically on their learning. Most importantly, the parents’ should enjoy observing their child confidently and enthusiastically discussing learning.
If you have any concerns or aspects you would rather not discuss with your child present - it is important to make contact with the teacher at another time before these sessions. As all parents have now received mid-year reports, this is your reference to academic achievement coupled with any of the ISA test results you have received for Year 4-6.
Congratulations to our athletes
A number of students took part in the ESF cross country and long distance running event last Saturday. Well done to all of those students who participated. Mr Buckley was proud of your performance and your positive approach and attitude when competing.

Celebrating Chinese New Year!
To celebrate the spirit of Chinese New Year and raise the profile of Mandarin in our school community, we are looking for parents to share an insight into what Chinese New Year means to them. You could read a short story of your choice, share a family tradition or a favourite song with our students. This could be shared in Mandarin or English or a combination of both. The sessions would take place at lunch time in the Library from 1 to 1:30pm on Monday February 12th, Tuesday February 13th, and Wednesday February 14th. If you can spare the time on one of these days, please email us at library@glenealy.edu.hk

Books for Birthdays
We appreciate students may wish to celebrate their birthdays with school friends and with that in mind, we have developed a "Books for Birthdays" system, which allows students to purchase a book from a selection in the Library to celebrate their birthday.
Students first take the book home to share with their parents, following which, the book is returned to school and becomes part of the Library collection.
There will be a special dedication inside the book to acknowledge the child who donated it.
Thanks to those families who celebrated their child’s birthday by purchasing a new book from Mrs Stones for our Books for Birthday programme in the library.
Please talk to Mrs Stones if you are interested.
