Principal Update
Good Afternoon Madeira Middle School Families,
It has been an adventurous start to this school year! Our MMS students are our "why". It has been amazing to see their smiling faces in-person and on our screens. The staff here at MMS is working extremely hard to adapt to how we are doing school differently this year. Learning new programs, technology, trouble shooting issues, cleaning, supporting one another, adapting to a block schedule, and the list goes on and on.... All of these new items come with some hiccups. We appreciate your patience and grace. We are all learning something each and every day.
For our families that are picking-up and dropping off students in the morning and/or afternoon, please make sure you are pulling all the way up to the beginning of the semi-circle (to the orange cone). Wherever you stop your car along that sidewalk, students should go ahead and exit your vehicle. This allows groups of cars to cycle through together to keep our back-up times to a minimum.
Throughout September, we will focus on teachable moments that connect to the first of our four parts to our Culture Playbook and what we believe as a building and as a district, Accountability and Action. It's what you say and what you do. We all own our attitude, actions, and words. We act with purpose and admit when we are wrong and fix it. I know I have certainly had some moments lately where I have reflected back and needed to admit when I was wrong and fix it. We are all facing some intensely stressful events right now, and it is too easy to fall below the line in our actions and words. Let's support one another to focus on our Accountability and Actions.
We are ALL in this together!

Remote Learners - we have an after school time set-up from 3:00-5:00 for students to come and get their pictures taken. If this block of time doesn't work, please call our front office and we will set a time up for you during the school day on the 10th to come in.
Picture Re-Take Day will be October 20th.
Chromebook Issues
We very strongly recommend purchasing chromebook insurance.
Morning Health Checks
MMS Absences Procedures and Policies
Students who are sick or displaying symptoms of illness should stay home. It is the parent’s responsibility to monitor symptoms and seek medical advice as needed.
When your student is sick or will be absent, here is what you should do and here is what you can expect:
- Please call the school 561-5555 or 924-3777 as you normally would and report that your student is absent.
- The school nurse may follow up and ask you a few additional questions so that we may have a better record of students who are out with illness and type of illness.
- If a student has symptoms of COVID-19 that do not have a known cause, a parent should consult with their healthcare provider. A doctor’s note explaining the non-COVID diagnosis should be provided to the school upon return (strep, allergies, mono, pertussis, etc.), or the doctor may decide that COVID testing is warranted.
- A student may return to school after 24 hours of being fever free with NO medications and have symptoms that are improving if they did not need to be tested for COVID-19 or if their test is negative. Students are NOT required to have a COVID-19 test to be able to return to school if it is not recommended by a healthcare provider.
- If your student is absent and staying at home for illness or another reason, there will be no guaranteed opportunity or requirement for the student to Zoom into the classes on those days. Zooming into the classroom is intended for online learners and those students quarantined, not necessarily for students who are absent for 1-3 days or those students whose families are going on vacation or heading out of town. Zooming into classes when absent from the classroom does not remove the absence from a student’s attendance record.
- If your doctor recommends testing for COVID-19, please know that your student will not be able to return to school until a negative test result is received and the result is provided in writing.
- If a student has symptoms and there is a known exposure to COVID-19, the student will be considered a “probable case” and should remain home for at least 10 days since symptom onset and be fever free without medication for 24 hours and other symptoms have improved.
- If absences extend beyond 3 days, the parent may contact the teacher or counselor to arrange for classroom / homework material to be provided and/or provide an opportunity to Zoom into the classroom. We ask that you give teachers or the counselor sufficient time to organize and plan for additional remote students.
Please also note in the event that a teacher is out for personal reasons with a sub and can not work that day(s), we are not asking our substitute teachers to run remote learning. Teachers will post an assignment to Schoology that is review or practice of content that was previously introduced, that both in-person and remote learners will be able to complete independently. No new content will be taught by a substitute teachers during these short teacher absences. In the event that a teacher may be out for multiple days and is able to work from home and remote into the classroom to teach, please know that we will encourage this.
Notes from the Nurse
This is a reminder that the required immunizations for seventh grade students are due September 14, 2020. I have received documentation from about 50% of the class. I am sure most of the students already have these shots, but I still need verification. Attached you will find a letter to provide that documentation. Please send it back by September 14. If you have questions or concerns, please call me.

Student Fees
Fees are now posted on Madeira Middle School website and are open to accept payment. We ask that all school fees be paid by September 12th.
Please note we had some field trip/experience fees paid in the Spring of last year to cover some specific activities such as the 5th grade hot air balloon ride, 7th grade March Madness, etc. Please know that these were kept in the grade level account in the hopes that we will have the opportunity to re-schedule this school year. If this does not occur, we will work to return the collected money to families.
If you would like to purchase chromebook insurance, which we strongly recommend, there are one of two ways this can be done.
You can send in a check made to payable to Madeira Middle School for $25.00 which can be add to your students school fee payment. School fees this year are $57.00, by adding your insurance the total amount due will be $82.00.

Update Your Student's Information
As we do each year, please take a few minutes to verify and update your student's important emergency contact and health information. Completing this online process has helped us to reduce the many emergency medical forms our parents use to receive at the beginning of the school year. Thanks in advance for your time in getting this completed.
Please follow these simple steps:
1. Use this secure link to access and review your student's registration information: https://cas.madeiracityschools.org/cas_MadeiraCityOH/login
2. For each returning student, you will need to use the following username and password to verify their information:
Username: Student ID Number
Password: Student Birthdate (MM/DD/YYYY)
3. Follow the prompts to complete verification of your student's information
