Principal's Weekly Update
RAISE Goal: to greet classmates, staff, and parents on arrival
Te reo phrase of the week: kia mutu koe? (are you finished)
Kia ora,
I hope everyone had a lovely time over the long weekend. Our students have been learning lots about the Treaty of Waitangi, especially its history and the significance it has in our modern world. As part of Matapu School’s commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the newly introduced Aotearoa/NZ Histories curriculum, our teaching staff participated in a van tour with John Hooker in the school holidays. John is a wealth of knowledge and took us around important historical sites for Ngā Ruahine Rangi. The stories and facts he shared with us were amazing and we will be sure to incorporate them in our learning programmes throughout the year.
Signing students out
As is often the case, parents need to pick their child/ren up early from time to time. Can we please ask that you sign your children out at the school office. This is a health and safety requirement, as if we have an emergency such as a fire, we need to know exactly who is at school. Unfortunately popping into your child’s classroom and letting the teacher know is not sufficient.
BYOD
We have again had a fantastic uptake with our BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) programme this year. If you are intending to buy your child a device to use at school, please remember the only device they can use at school is an Apple iPad. It has to be able to run the latest operating system so that all of the school apps work effectively. If you are unsure, please pop into the school office for further information.
Kia pai to wiki (have a wonderful weekend).

Cleaner Vacancy
Due to family commitments our amazing cleaner Jacque Hollenback has resigned from her cleaning role. We are therefore after a new cleaner to join our team from the beginning of March. The position involves working 1.5 hours per day, Monday to Friday (7.5 hours a week), plus some extra hours in the school holidays. If you’d like to apply for the position, please contact James by email at principal@matapu.school.nz or (06 272 6764). The successful applicant will need to pass a police vetting check.

Pursue that which is precious and do not be deterred by anything less than a lofty mountain.
Room 1
In Room 1, we are beginning to look into our Pepeha. We have started by investigating the area we are from and looking at how we connect to our place.
For our piece of art, we used positive and negative space to highlight the areas that are important to us.
Room 2
We have had another great week in Room 2! As we get to know each other, we have also been making links to our identity. Children have found out information about their heritage/whakapapa and have produced some stunning mixed media pieces of Art, as seen in our pictures.
Goal setting has also been hot in conversation and mahi. This term is chocka with events, which are much more widely valued than perhaps in the past - the old saying that "We don't know what we have got until we don't have it" comes to mind, as we have missed out on community events due to Covid.
Room 3
This week in PE our class has enjoyed swimming in preparation for our school swimming sports on the horizon. Students are moving with fluency on their backs and fronts, and growing in confidence as they develop knowledge in skills in swimming and survival skills. They are moving, in, under and through the water and looking quite flash! Good positive steps in our swimming knowledge this week Room Three.
Well done to you all.
Mr Bird
Room 4
Room 5
Room 5 has started training for athletics. We have been using the high jump and practising our throw for shot put and discus.
Another important part of our week has been setting up our books for learning. Each day, we have been talking about what our books should look like, with beautiful handwriting and worksheets glued in neat and straight. Finally, we have started some artwork which we hope to get completed in the next couple of weeks. With our theme for this term, we are creating some self portraits to show how we are all individuals and unique in our own way.
Room 6
We have finished two weeks at school- it has gone by fast. Room 6 has been amazing so far!
On Tuesday we welcomed Eddie to our Room 6 family and Onyx joined us on Wednesday. They have both slotted in so quickly and are really enjoying the playground and swimming pool too!
This week we have decided on the rules we need for our class to run smoothly, and we are learning to do “Give me 5” on the mat and how to stop and listen for instructions. We have done lots of learning about the letter ‘s’ - how to write it and stretch out its sound, and think of lots of things that start with it. We have enjoyed great rhyming poems and wonderful stories and worked on a poster about ourselves to brighten the walls of Room 6. Most importantly we have been working on building relationships with each other through shared play and buddy learning.
On Wednesday lunchtime Brent Espin, Nathan Joyce and Steve Bailey kindly ran a Rippa Rugby game for the juniors and that was a real highlight for the week…looking forward to more of those!
