From School Administration
It was a great first week at Lisbon. Students poured in through the front door with excitement and with the energy associated with the start of a school year. Our staff was there to meet and greet every student, directing them all to their classrooms where teachers happily met students at their classroom doors.
The week was filled with re-connecting with friends, reviewing routines and procedures, and acclimating to the school environment. During the upcoming weeks, our teachers are going to be spending a lot of time ensuring all students are provided with the tools to learn. As I reflect on the happiness expressed by our students as they entered the building, I am reminded of the tremendous importance of happiness and belonging as a foundation for learning. We hope all students experience this joy of learning each and every day at Lisbon. We are focused on being KIND and spreading kindness throughout our building and our community!
We currently have 92% of our emergency cards complete on Family File. Most of our families have done an excellent job completing this task. If you need assistance to complete your Family File, please contact the front office. It is important that we have emergency contact information for every child. You can get started by visiting HCPSS Connect.
We thank you for your continued patience in the car loop as students, parents, and staff learn the procedures. With a larger number of parents dropping off and picking up, please be prepared for delays. We also thank you for your patience with our bus drivers as they learn their routes. Please be at your stop 10-15 minutes early this upcoming week.
Thank you for all you have done to help prepare your child for this new school year! We are looking forward to an exciting and successful school year. Enjoy your long weekend.
Have a wonderful weekend,
Mrs. Anoff & Mr. Scobie

OUR WEEKLY NEWSLETTER, THE LISBON LINES
Counseling Corner
Dear Families,
I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself to you as well as describe the components of the elementary school counseling program.
My name is Alicia Taylor and I am delighted to be joining the Lisbon Elementary School community! This is my tenth year as an HCPSS elementary school counselor, with past experience at Cradlerock, Pointers Run and Gorman Crossing Elementary schools. I have a Master’s Degree in School Counseling from Johns Hopkins University and I am a nationally board certified counselor, as well as a licensed clinical professional counselor in the state of Maryland.
The Elementary School Counseling Program is an important component of your child’s educational years as it sets the tone for developing skills, knowledge, and attitudes necessary for our children to become healthy, productive adults. It is also a time when students develop attitudes concerning school, self, peers, social groups, and family. It is my hope that we will work together as a team, including families, teachers, students, and staff, to encourage your child to reach their full potential.
The school-counseling program is for all children and is developmental in nature. During the first few days of school, I visited each grade and introduced myself to the students and described the role of a school counselor. As the year progresses, I will visit classrooms to teach lessons to the children related to a number of counseling topics, such as bullying prevention, self-worth, emotional regulation, organization and test taking skills, as well as conflict resolution and career exploration.
Small group counseling groups are also offered at various times during the year on a variety of topics such as friendship, changing families, social skills, handling worries, test taking skills and much more! Families are always notified should your child be recommended for a small group, and your questions and input are encouraged. In addition, I will meet with children for individual counseling sessions and can assist you by making referrals to outside agencies, upon request.
Lastly, I am here as a resource to you. Please feel free to email me at Alicia_Taylor@hcpss.org with any questions or concerns. I look forward to working with you and your children this school year at Lisbon!
Sincerely,
Alicia Taylor, NCC, LCPC

GIFTED AND TALENTED CORNER
GIFTED AND TALENTED EDUCATION PROGRAM
Attention 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade parents.
During the first week of school, students will hear about the possible Instructional Seminar offerings for their grade level for this school year. Instructional Seminars are small, interest-based groups that meet with a G/T Resource Teacher approximately once a week during recess. The purpose of these seminars is for students to develop advanced-level and interpersonal skills while generating a curiosity about learning about a topic of interest to them. The duration of each seminar varies based on the topic and may range from a few weeks, to a few months, to all-year long (most offerings will be approximately 6 weeks). Students may participate in more than one seminar during the year. Also, students who participate in band or strings may still participate in a seminar. Should there be an occasional conflict, students are asked to attend band or strings rather than the seminar that day.
Instructional Seminar titles and descriptions are shown on this Instructional Seminar Offerings Sheet. To participate, your child may obtain an Application located in an envelope hanging in their pod area (or parents may print their own at home using the link on the chart). Once complete, including a parent signature, your child may return it to the “Completed Applications” envelope also hanging in their pod area. Applications are due by Tuesday, September 6th.
Note that finalized offerings will be based upon teacher availability and the number of students who are interested in participating. These schedules will be shared with classroom teachers and students and will be posted in the pod for reference.
Please ask your child about their interest in the Instructional Seminars presented. Though we appreciate parents encouraging their children to apply to participate, we have learned that the students who are most successful are those who truly have an interest in or a passion for the topic. If you have further questions, please contact a G/T Resource Teacher: AJ Nath at Anjan_Nath@hcpss.org or Jodi O’Connor at Jodi_OConnor@hcpss.org. Thank you.
Rainbow Representative Update
The Rainbow Representative for our school is Heather Swanek. Please feel free to reach out to her via phone (school number) or email: Heather_Swanek@hcpss.org if you have any questions or concerns in the area of inclusivity of LGBTQIA+ students, staff, and families. She is happy to support our families.
Safe Space Posters:
Around our school, you will see some "Safe Space" posters. Sometimes, for a variety of reasons, a person, or certain group of people, might feel unsafe to show their true colors for fear that others might treat them differently, or refer to them in an unkind way. At HCPSS, it is our priority to make sure every student not only is safe, but also feels safe to be their authentic and true selves. We hope our Safe Space posters serve as a reminder that there is a trusted adult you can go to who is an ally to the LGBTQ+ community, who will affirm a student's chosen name and pronouns, and who will not disclose information to others about identity and orientation if a student shares that information. Teachers who have this poster in their classrooms have declared their space a safe space for ALL students.HCPSS Student & Parent Handbook

DOGS ARE NOT PERMITTED ON SCHOOL PROPERTY
As much as we enjoy seeing family dogs at arrival and dismissal, all HCPSS schools are expected to adhere to the following policy:
Animals in schools or offices, leashed or not, present safety, environmental, and liability issues. Students and staff may be exposed to potential physical hazards, such as bites, and/or allergy related health problems. As a result, animals are prohibited within HCPSS buildings. Animals are also prohibited on school system property during arrival, dismissal, recess or other HCPSS sponsored outdoor activities. Service animals or service animals in training per MD Annotated Code Section 7-705 (Service Animals) and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) as well as animals approved for instructional purposes are exempt from this prohibition.
Parents who bring dogs on their walks to school must wait for students off school property. We want to ensure the safety of our students as they arrive and leave school. Thank you for adhering to this policy.
DRESS CODE
Please help your child come to school prepared for learning. HCPSS Policy 9210 provides information about the dress code in all Howard County Schools. Please review the policy here. Here are a couple of highlights:
- Hats, hoods, head wear are permitted as long as the face is visible, and it does not interfere with instruction.
- Tank tops and tops with spaghetti straps are okay but....
- Clothing that exposes or reveals the chest, midriff, pelvic/groin area, and buttocks is not permitted.
We encourage students to wear sneakers to school. They are the safest shoe for PE and for recess.
We are seeing an increase in spinner and popper toys being brought to school. These items should be kept at home or in your child's backpack during the school day.
"What Your Child Will Learn” Guides
What Your Child Will Learn guides provide an overview of the instructional program for your child’s grade, as well as student goals and expectations. The guides include information to help parents monitor and support their child’s progress during the school year.
Individual guides are provided for each grade level. Each grade level guide provides information categorized by curriculum area, e.g., Language Arts, Science, etc.
The guides are available online only; print versions are no longer distributed. Specific guide webpages may be printed from the website.
Specific student programs may differ depending on instructional needs.

Information and Application for Free and Reduced Meals (FARMs)
Over the past two years, all students were able to access meals through the school. Federal Funding for free meals for all students ended on June 30. Therefore, to qualify for Free and Reduced Meals, families will need to apply for that benefit.
HCPSS participates in the National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs, which provide families with significant benefits to help save money. Qualification is based on family size and income, and enrollment is confidential. All children in households receiving benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) can get free meals regardless of income, and students from households that meet federal income guidelines are eligible to receive free or reduced-price meals. Those eligible for reduced-price lunch pay $0.10 and breakfast is free.
Free and Reduced Meals eligibility provides discounts for summer programs, SAT, recreation programs, Maryland Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), and internet programs.
Health & Safety
Currently, protective face masks are voluntary in all HCPSS buildings and on school buses. The state does not require proof of COVID-19 vaccination for public school students nor is the school system providing mass COVID-19 testing opportunities for staff or students.
The most up-to-date health and safety information can be found online and will be continually updated. Please note that health and safety protocols are subject to change, pending guidance and recommendations from federal, state, and local health officials, among other sources.
