Everything is Awesome!
MAETEL1 Curation #Day8
Challenge Accepted.
The #MSUrbanSTEM challenged the entire #MAET program after creating a dancing vine. The gauntlet had been thrown. We began brainstorming how to respond to this challenge, considering our meditation session, our Maker projects and our general exhaustion at the end of packed second week of the program.
Finally, Mary had a lightbulb: act out (in dramatic fashion) what happens when she and Liz give us our quickfire assignments. Our vine took two takes, and about an hour of planning, but the acting is spot on. Check out the UrbanSTEM and MAET vines below!
#MAETEL1 is now waiting for responses from #MAETEL2 and #MAETGalway.
QUICKFIRE! (for real)
After our impromtu quickfire vine, we were given the real quickfire. This proved to be one of the more difficult tasks we've been given. Mary and Liz gave us specific directions, with very little wiggle-room, and challenged us to complete our task in 90 minutes. We had to use Mozilla Popcorn Maker to teach an audience about a technology term. After spending the week discussing Copyrighting and Creative Commons licenses, it was imperative that all of our digital media had a CC allowing us to reuse or remix. This program turned out to be a challenge for several groups, Erin and Becky found that troubleshooting was necessary to find the best device for the job. Rosie and Taylor, on the other hand found that it was a user-friendly program and they were able to finish with time to spare!
Talking Tech
In the morning, Taylor taught us about Blendspace, and modeled the program with the lessons she did last year for her Vet students. This program, she explained, is a user-friendly platform that allows teachers to create mini lessons that students can access at home or in class. She said this is particularly useful in lab classes, where students will need to complete several parts of a lab and may have different directions for each part.
In the afternoon, Laurie had everyone sign into Kahoot.it and play a Star Wars/Star Trek game! Again, to show us the Kahoot! technology, Laurie modeled it for us, by having us act as students. We each had our cell phones out and had to try to answer questions about Star Wars and Star Trek as quickly as possible to make it to the top of the leaderboard. Alan took an early lead but Taylor quickly swooped in to take the lead in our game! This brought us into a discussion about how games can be engaging and a great learning/reviewing tool in the classroom. Play the Kahoot! Here!
